Bible Institute conference will open in
the White Temple (First Baptist church)
and Tuesday additional classes will be
started In the Sunnyside Congregational
church.
Dr. A. B. Winchester of Toronto,
Canada, and Dr. L. S. Chafer of New
Tork city have been secured by Pr. B.
B. Sutcliffe, local director, to conduct
the classes.
Beginning Monday at 3 p. m. and
continuing dally except Saturday at 3
and 7 :45 p. rrt, Dr. .Winchester will
speak at the White Temple. In the aft
ernoons he will lecture on the Epistle to
the Coloaslans -and in the evening will
speak on outstanding phases of the
Christian life.
Dr. Chafer will begin his lectures at
2 p. m. Tuesday in the Sunnyside Con
gregational church, speaking daily ex
cept Saturday at 3 and 7 :45 p. in. He
will talk on the gospel of John n the
afternoon and in the evenings from the
general subject, "Seven Highways of
Prophecy."
Dr. Sutcliffe .will open the conference
Sunday with sermons at 11 a. m. and 8
p. m. at the White Temple. For the
next. 10 days he will conduct a confer
ence at Vancouver, Wafh.

armament, and we urse our dele
gates not to be daunted by the ob
stacles which will certainly arise,
formidable though these may be,
but father to pursue the main object
as one indispensable to national and
world welfare and attainable by
energy, insight, patience and reso
lution. We express our confidence
that the conference will possess and
exercise the high wisdom and good
will demanded for this areat
achievement.
In view of the deep concern of all
the people in this issue, we express
the hope that the largest possible
publicity shall be given to the pro
ceedings of the conference, and par
ticularly that all final actions be
taken in the full light of day and
without concealment of any sort
The executive board of the council Is
calling on all of the ministers of the
city to provide for meetings lor prayer
in their churches at sometime between
the hours of 9 and 12 on Friday. These
services will be a joint memorial for the
boys who gave their lives in France and
a period of Intercession for God's bless
ing on the Washington conference.

has been asked to buy 300 square feet

foot. These pledges are asked for three

at the University of Colorado.

church year. Seventr-seven were baptized by the

workers have decided to hold an institute after

Grace Baptist church, of which the Rev. 3.
F. Huckleberry is pastor, has purchased addi

near future.
Ir. ii. B. Sutcliffe will occupy the White
Temple pulpit Sunday. The second Mood
Bible institute conference will begin in , this

At the East Side Baptist church Sunday the
Her. Darnel Bryant, associate pastor, will preach.
Ir. W. B. Hi is in Seattle lecturing at the
state conference of Baptist ministers, and con
ducting a series of evangelistic meetings at the
l mversity Baptist coorcu. He will return to
Portland next week. Father and Son week win
he observed with a banquet Tuesday at 7:30
o'clock. Judge Jacob Kanzler will be the nrinci
pul speaker. At the B. Y. P. U. meeting at

services of the new Congregational
church which haa been organised there.

cipal speakers.
Seventy -six charter membesa have Joined the
organisation. Rt. f. W. Keagy haa been called
to the pastorate. At present the aerricea art
being held in one of the theatres, but a rigor
ous campaign is under way for the immediate
erection of a chnrch edifice. Lots have been
purchased and plans an being drawn for the
new building. A few days ago the finance
committee reported that (6000 bad been pledged
for the new church.
The regular monthly meeting of the board
of directors of the Oregon Congregational con
ference was held last Wednesday. In addition
tn the uual .routine business the election of
officers for the year was held, resulting as
follows: President. R. F. Clark of Pacific
university; chairman of the board, A. S. Roberta
of The Italics; nee chairman. Her. H. L. Bates,
D. D.. of Forest Grove: secretary. Rev. O. P.
Avery of Portland., and Mrs. Harold S. Gilbert
of Portland, treasurer of benevolences.
Dr. W. T. McElveen has arrant ed a disarma
ment service for Sunday morning at tha First
Congregational church. lie has prepared a
special prayer which is to be used, not only
at this service but in the homes of the parish
all nest week. A creed affirming a belief in
the possibility of a warless worid will be
