By By-Baas H. Cokca
Retailers in some sections continue to
shade flour prices) in anticipation of a
general drop in the wholesale price for
the immediate future. Some are raid
ing their price unchanged but ' there
appears a tendency, especially among;
the cash and carry houses, to work off
some of their stocks before another
wholesale drop occurs.
In the meantime there is more or less
shading of bread prices by some of the
smaller bakers. The larger institutions
continue to ask extreme values for the
pound loaves which the general public
buys, but some of the smaller bakers
are underselling them by 2c a loaf, and
claim they are making money.
Retail butchers are still asking ex
treme prices for their meats, despite all
the price cutting at wholesale. The
butchers have one of the tightest little
organizations that exists in the local ter
ritory and among its members there is
no tendency whatever to cut prices.
Wholesale meat men are up in arms re
garding the lack of price cutting by
the retailers in view of the fact that
prices here at wholesale are lower than
for many years past This Is especially
true of country killed calves which are
today selling in the whole--'- at
13 Vic a pound for best quality in the
round while when veal was at its high
mark fully -double this price was asked
Tind paid by retailers. Few of them
have changed their selling prices at all.
The same Is' true of mutton and lamb.
Bargains in- lambs are available and
these are taken advantage of by retail
ers, who fall to make any sort of con
ceKsions to the public.

Apple shippers and growers ara daily rblatiBfl
the law and some day a few of them win awaken
to find themaeltvt i trouble as well tt baring
their shipments confiscated ror . riolation of the
pure food law.
Inrestigation made by The Journal indicates
that those who are obeying th law in regard
to marketing the net weight on each box of
anolea are much in th minority. Maioritf of
the growers snd shippers Tiolat this' law openly
ana inspecaon oiucuus nera nan uums uuuuus
in tha matter.
Then again the law is being violated by the
marketing of "C" grade apple as "fsncy' or
eren "eitra fancy." Eren some of the Hood
River interests are doinz this, althouch the reg
ular organizationa are holding their grades up to
general specification.
Wormy apples and applea tnieciea witn nan
Jose scale axe likewise being offered and sold.
mrui ss vet nnmoleated br affinals. Some day
these officials will wake up and protect the iron
industry.
The lis sneriaiiT srjectfies thai, not only snail
the name l the grower or shipper be placed
upon eec-h box of apples, but that the net weight
must also be pa oilseed.
Dullness continues in the apple trade here,
although the movement of low priced goods is
quite fair. Such a heary volume of thia latter
stock is coming forward that little call is shown

Good milling -wheat continues scarce and it is
practically impossible to purchase anything in
the quality line below $1.10 per bushel, Port
land track, for bluestexn or Baart.
Offers for clnb wheat at toe moment are not
above $1 a bushel, although the price is likely
to fluctuate considerably, even during the day.
Exporters are beginning to inquire for supplies.
but there is little tendency on the part of grow
ers u) ev go. uesi'iie iu recent uu u me cuu-
trary. In fact, the movement of wheat is now
limited, so far as new business is concerned.
With only three ship now listed for -wheat
loading here, it looks as if the big movement
export is over. However, there are many ships
which will take out parcel lots. .This list is un
usually long. For that reason export wheat
movement is likely to continue lor an extended
period.

Suffer Heavy Losses
Spokane. Wash., Nov. 5. Spokana investors

realty board.
"If there is oil in Spokane or vicinity we will
welcome it," said Greenwood. "If there it not,
let in. prevent aa far as possible wildcat enter

community. It is estimated that in 1920
$1,500,000 was taken out of Spokane for
