UNION NATIONAL BANK, SEATTLE, TRUSTEE The Puget Sound Telephone Company, a Wash ington corporation, was organized in 1915 to purchase and consolidate the properties of the Puget Sound Independent Telephone Company 'and the competing properties of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company. The Company controls ; and does practically ; the entire . local , and long distance telephone business in Snohomish, Skagit and Island Counties, and in parts of King and Whatcom ; Counties, Washington; operating, as a "connecting company Of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company, and the Bell System. (As of December 3t, l 920. over one-third of , the Bell System stations were owned by such "connecting companies.") : SECURITY The bonds constitute a direct -first mortgage lien upon all of the Company's property, subject only to a mortgage of under 200,000,' maturing in 1927, secured upon about one-third of the property. ' " The actual value of the Puget Sound Tetephone Company's plant the only value that can be used for rate, making is largely, in excess of its book value. The appraised value of the Company's plant as of September" i, 1919,' was 2,230,593; addi tions to plant from September 1, 1919, to July 31. 1921, were 252,817, making total value as of July 31, 1921, 2,483,410, or practically 24 times the amount of first mortgage bonds outstand ing. At July 31, 1921, the telephone plants in use wet e valued on the books of the Company at 1,892,216. Adequate charges against earnings have been made for depreciation and absolescence. NET EARNINGS (after maintenance, taxes and rentals) Jfor the past five an one-half years have averaged in excess of 3 5 times interest require ments on the first mortgage bonds. A sinking fund equal , to 3 of the principal amount of First Mortgage Bonds outstanding operates annually to purchase bonds in the open market tip to 105 and interest or redeem by lot at that price. . The Trust Deed securing these bonds was drawn by Messrs. Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, San Francisco; all legal matters incident to the issuance of the bonds have been passed upon by Messrs.
