Real huckleberries, probably the first
genuine stock the local market has
shown for some time, has arrived here
from near the last growth of vegetation
on Mount Hood. These huckleberries
are about, as large as a smatl cherry
and are plump and of excellent flavor
as well as sound. They are selling
around 25 cents a pound in the retail
shops as compared with 17V4 cents' for
the little stock that is usually sold as
the huckleberry.
Consumers who have a car and have
a day off can secure them by traveling
on the new Mount Hood loop road.
Eggs are again higher in the local
market but today's prices are much be
low this period a yoar ago.

New crop flour is being offered to tha local

as the old crop product. Here and there soma
of the smaller millers arc reporting shading new
crop 10 to 15c a barrel from old crop values,
but this' is a general condition among tome in

Unusual values are ruling in the wheat mar
ket because of changing world's conditions. Uer
mauy and Italy are said to be rather eagerly
seeking hard red wheat and are willing to py
a premium over the hard white, a condition
most unusual for thia market so far as export
business is concerned.
Considerable wheat was purchased at interior

South Dakota hogs were again received here
and this affected prices to the extent of 50c
generally. Cattle .were alow and weak while
sheep were steady and lambs firm.
At last the Portland market baa felt the af
fect of being out of line with the outside trade.
Values here were oft 50 twrally Thursday at
North Portland, but in spots lots at ware as
much as 75c
Considering the values on hegs at midwest
and eastern points, values here have been en
tirely too high, resulting ia a loss to the small
killers who have not bono able to bring in sup
plies from the East.
On the basis of the latest eastern markets
hogs can be landed in Portland and along the
Pacific coast generally at $0.60 to $9. NO per
hundred pound. Ss es here recently were around
$12.50 for tops snd one lot went as high a
$12.75. Thursday the market here dropped
back to $12 for extreme tops, later the gvnarel
top dropped to (11.75 with the bulk of tha tops
at $11.50.

the various qualit es. In reality the market is
weaker. There was on'y a fair run lnursOty
but the trade appears to be overstocked.

FLEET, LOVE DECLARES
Officials of the Emergency Fleet cor
poration are just as anxious to build up
the trans-Pacific business as the mer
chants of the west coast, but they are
handicapped by lack of ships and funds,
according to a message received today
by H. B. Van Duser. president of the
Chamber of Commerce, from W. J.
Love, vice president of the corporation
In charge of operations.
Love expresses h's appreciation that
the recent decision of the board trans
ferring all of the business of this port
to the Columbia-Pacific company har
beart so satisfactory to the chamber. He
says :
"In the future we will rely upon all
trade bodies and merchants putting
aside prejudices and personal Interests
and concentrating upon building up on
a sound basis your trans-Pacific busi
ness. "You may always rely upon myself
and my associates giving complete sup
port, so far as our ships and finances
will permit, as we have but the same de
sire you have.''

Uidgefield, Wash., Sept. 15. Damaging
frost-., killing bean, tomato, cucumber, potato
vines snd other crops, have occurred here in
Uie outlying fsrming districts the past few nights
The damage is particularly noticeable on the
lower levels of ground, while on higher soil
the crops apparently show no signs of having
hern nitped hv Jack Frost. His arrival here
this year is somewhat earlier than past falls and
old arttlers are inclined to believe that it is the
forerunner of ah early dry winter.

New York. Sept. 15. (I. N. 8.) Additional
reactionary sentiment was noted at the opening

weather reports more favorable. Advices from
the South as to the crop condition snd the spot
