quite an excitement for MR. PERCY
JOHNSON, at the Northwest Auto com
pany, as she would always sign letters

back a few hot letters, so the story goes.
A fair stranger oame into- the salesroom
last week, and JOHNSON approached
to wait on her. She announced that she
was MISS C. THURBER, secretary to
FRANK j BROTHERTON of. Walla
Walla Walla, and said she would like
to have JOHNSON deliver her a ear to
take back. JOHNSON almost fell over.
As soon as she had gone JOHNSON went
through all the letter files and read his
letters over to see what ho had written.
A few minutes after MISS THURBER

Sunday for a three weeks' trip back
East., Fred win visit all the factories

attend the International speed boat
races, which are to be held at Detroit
soon. Fred's Vogler boy No. 1 was en
tered in this race, but due to
trouble will not bo ready to race.

Kidgefield. Wash, Aug. 20. Because
the town of La Center was incorporated
into a municipality a few years ago. a
part of the Pacific highway will remain
unpaved. A stats law forbids the use of
state highway funds within the limits of
an incorporated settlement, and for this
reason when paving resumes on the Pa
cific highway next year La Center will
be passed up. v
The assessed valuation of the town
' bt 60,ooo, and the cost of paving
the half mile stretch through It would
bo about 120.000. so although the com.
munity may possess unlimited amounts
of municipal spirit the funds necessary
to finance the project within the In
corporated limits are lacking. It has
been proposed that La Center disincor
porate, allow the state to finish the
paving of the highway and then rein
corporate, but the proposal -has not met

traffic until the rock is laid. Compara

road rapidly and good progress Is be
ing made. The Multnomah county line
Is seven and a fraction miles northwest
or bandy, and the general route follows
the Oregon trail beyond the town of

Artistic bridge structures of concrete
are being constructed at Alder. Cedar

crete Dozes are at Whisker. Badser.
oeaver and other small creeks. - This
road will be In the class A. the work
alt being of the highest standard, and
also traverses wonderful soenie spots
which many claim will equal, or even
surpass, the world-famed Columbia high
way. This section Is expected to prove
a great attraction for tourists In the
"25 exposition. There win also be groat
attractions for those who buUd summer
homes out this way when the road Is
completed. It Is hoped that surfacing
can be completed from the Multnomah
line to Cherry ville this winter, which
win make traffic much better than here-
