weeks In August and during the entire.

patch ships and to date there has been
no congestion, but with the -huge amount
of tonnage listed for the near, future
both terminals and private docks will be
running overtime.
The latest break In on charters was
Friday afternoon when : five Japanese
were announced. Wilcox-Hayes -company.
; who : formerly have given their
principal attention to furnishing out
bound cargo for regular liners, broke In
with the steamships Holland' Maru and
: Haenan Maru for lumber and the Shlnbu
Maru and Ume Maru for wheat or flour,
all for Japan or the Orient.
The fifth Japanese vessel to be re
leased was the Thlbu Maru by Kerr Gil
ford. The vessel has been under char
ter for some time, but was not released
until Friday afternon. The Thlbu Maru
is due to arrive here late in August and
will be one of the first to' get away in
September. j
For a time there was a flash of Brit
ish tonnage on the board at the Mer
chant's exchange, but this has again
given away to the Japanese. The ship
ping board made a feeble attempt and
one was placed for wheat and several
for barley at San Francisco. With char
ter rates being equal (45s). the red tape
of the shipping board is too slow and
exporters get better results by taking
foreign tonnage. - . j

Astoria. Aug. 13. The task of salvag
ing the cargo and hulk of the wrecked
steamer Canadian Exporter presents
pretty problem to wrecking companies
and mariners. Bids for the purchase of
the wreck and Us cargo will be opened
here tomorrow by Lloyds' agent and
hipping men are speculating on the
process and success ct salvaging.
The principal item in the cargo Is
2,160,000 feet of "Jap squares, while
there is a large quantity of other mer
chandise, including veneer, telegraph
wire and automobile tires.
Where the hulk lies, mariners think
" it can be approached by a barge in calm
weather, and that a portion of the tim
ber cargo, which la valued at . 5311,000,
can be transferred to the lighter. The
other goods present even, easier prob
lems because of its smaller ouuc ana
wreierht- -
The difficulties to be encountered, it
is believed, will arise in the weather,
which may be expected to grow worse
about the middle of September, and the
. question of mooring a barge to the side
of the broken craft. It is also doubted
if the weather and time will permit of
operations of any extensive nature be
ing conducted for the salvaging of the
vessel itself or any of its fittings.
It Is expected that, as the timber cargo
is removed, and the problem of getting
it out becomes serious, the purchasers
i will dynamite the hulk. This would re
lease jnuch of the lumber and. If done
on a flood tide, would let It be carried
. into the entrance of wlllapa harbor.
