k 18 THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON WEDNESDAY. JULY t?, 191. 2: KENNEDY QUITS HIS POST WITH NORTON LILLY CO C. D. Kennedy has resigned as- general agent of the. Norton-Lilly company at Portland, handling the Isthmian steam ships. Kennedy's service with the com pany will terminate August 1, when Lilly, vice president, and Edwards, gen eral coast agent at San Francisco, will arrive in Portland to relieve Kennedy. No information has been given as to who will succeed the local agent. While not officially announced, Ken nedy will cast his lot with the Oregon & Ocean company, stevedores, liners and general agents. The new corporation will be composed of Captain W. Z. Has- kins, E. E. Johnson and C. D. Kennedy. .Haskins has been with the Oregon & Ocean since the incorporation and is an old timer in the stevedoring game. E. E. Johnson has been traffic man ager for the Pacific Steamship com pany In the Orient and recently has been acting agent for the Admiral line at Portland. , succeeding the late Frank J. O'Connor. Johnson resigned from the Pacific Steamship company's service and until the first of the month the local af fairs are being cared for by M. J, Wright of the Seattle office. C D. Kennedy of the Norton-Lilly company is one of the best known steamship men on the coast. For many years prior to the war he was engaged with the American-Haw iian company and with the formation of the shipping board was placed in charge of the local office or the division of operations. TU FREE YANKS Washington, July 27. (I. N. S.) The United States has made new demands upon soviet Russia for the immediate release of American citizens who are now held prisoners In Russia, It was learned at the state department today. The note of this government voicing the demands has been dispatched to the American consular agent at Reval to be handed to the soviet representative there for communication to his govern ment. This is understood to be the first di- "rect demand made upon soviet Russia .by this government for the release of ,, the Americans, previous overtures hav- ing been carried on through neutral agencies..' The communication is understood to contain a stern warning to Russia that the soviet authorities can hold no hope for any American aid for the people of -Russia who are reported to be suffering from starvation and disease, while .American citizens are being held in , prison under soviet orders. " There are now about eight Americans who are in jail in Russia and approxi -.jnately 100 more who are being detained i by the soviet authorities, although they i are not actually imprisoned. The action of this government is understood to have followed receipt of .a letter from one of the American prls .oners in Russia relating to the horrible Conditions under which the prisoners are being held and making a dramatic appeal ror stern measures Dy una nation vto secure the liberty of the American prisoners. Congress Is Asked For $125,000,000 By Shipping Board Washington. July 27. (I. N. S.) The dire need of the United States Shipping board for an appropriation of $125,000, 000 to continue the operation of the Amer- -ican merchant fleet was laid before the ''house appropriations committee today in -executive session by Chairman Lasker. Members of the committee demanded de tails of the needs of the board and Las ker went into this matter at great length. W. J. Bryan, Himself, Nabbed as a Speeder; s Shakes With Judge Waukegan. 111.. July 27. (I. N. S.) William Jennings Bryan, speeding from Delaven. Wis., to Waukegan to deliver a lecture, was arrested at Antioch. I1L, it was learned today. The commoner told the constable who he was, but it made no difference to the of. leer. The r ice judge shook hands with Bryan and did not Impose a fine. Indians Dance Three Days Without Eating . Pagoso Springs. Colo., July 27. (U. P.) The annual sun dance of the Ute Indians, at Ignacio, ended here today. FAjr three days, nine Indian braves chanted and danced without eating or drinking.
