Price of several varieties of berries
declined this morning on the Tamhin
street public market following the ar
rival of the Gresham growers with good
Quality fruit at reduced prices.
The Gresham people appeared early
with about 250 crates of loganberries,
raspberries and cherries, and within two
hours doubled their stock, with promise
of more before the close of the day if
the trade demanded it. The loganberries
were well ripened and in good shape for
canning, while the other fruits were
picked so they would keep for a day.
Everything offered appeared to be top
quality stock.
The market master posted a new price
list today, the first since July I, but he
again neglected to officially advise both
the public and the growers as to the
maximum price on cherries. As a rev
suit salesmen were getting all kinds of
prices, some asking as high as 15 cents
for extra fancy stock.
Cherry prices should not be so high
this season, as the canneries are hot
buying in a liberal way. A few prudent
farmers are cleaning up their crop early
by selling at 5 cents per pound.
Price on dressed chickens dropped in
keeping with the general sluggishness in
the poultry market.

Puget Sound Salmon
Fishing Season Cut
By Five New Orders
KaattSe. Jnlv 6. In a series of five orders
just promulgated by the state fisheries board
of Washington, effective July 20, salmon fishing
on Puget Sound is curtailed and the weekly
closed season on the sockeye and humpback fish
ing grounds is moved forward 24 hours. Seven
spa vvning , preserves rp .cesled and the Snoho
mish and Skagit rivers are closed beginning Oc
tober 26. says a statement issued b; U H.
Darwin, secretary of the board and state SU
Derrisor of fisheries.
Order No. 11 closes all of Puget Sound to
salmon fishing except with hook and line for
the personal use of the taker from August 26
to September 15, and from October 26 to the
following April 30, all dates inclusive. The
closed season f torn August 26 to September 15
will permit of by far the largest portion of the
humpback run escaping to the spawning grounds
as it is during this time that this specie of
almon runs in the largest number. The dosed
season from October 2,6 to April 30 affords
protection to silversidea, chums or dogs, and
steelheads.
Order No. 12 advances the weekly closed sea
son of July and August on Puget Sound 24
hours m that portion of the Sound westerly and
northerly of a lite drawn from Point Wilson to
Point Partridge and across the western en
trance of Deception Pass. "
The object of this order is to permit the
closed season on Puget Sound to precede and
overlap the closed season of the Fraser river in
British Columbia, thus permitting of a greater
escape of sockeye salmon up that stream than
under toe present conditions where the
are identical.
tralia with a cargo- of wheat in bulk, re
cently took in a load of 4500 tons at
Sydney and was dispatched to the
United Kingdom for orders, according to
the Canadian department of trade and
commerce. Australian, wheat growers
have long been interested in the bulk
handling of wheat.
The first shipment ot wneat in wux is
largely experimental and it will be the only
shipment made until the results are known.
The varying temperatures encountered during the
voyage are a subject ot concern. 1 tie cargo

then through the equatorial regions, and finally
through a colder climate to reach its
SSjfcSsstssa How these temperature variations
will affect the cargo is as yet undertermined.
As the dunnage required for lining the heeds
la not available is Australia, the timber baa to
be imported and the coat of lining is therefore
a large item. In this instance the cost was
2619 ($12,743 at normal exchange) for the
one ship, and as the cargo totaled 166,900
bushels, the cost of fitting the ship was nearly
4d (8c) par bushel. Although the cost of load
ing bulk wheat it ordinarily much less than
loading it in bass, the expense of lining the
ship in this instance made the bulk shipment
10s 4d ($2.51) per ton higher than the cost
of loading bagged wheat Shippers and ship
owners are therefore not especially favorable to
ward bulk loading at the present time.

Eugene. Or July 6. More than a half mil
Hon pounds of cherries had been put up last
Thursday at the bast checking up of the Eugene
Fruit Growers' association cannery and since then
the fruit bss been coining in at the rate of
75,000 pounds a day, states J. O. Holt, mana

history of the cannery is this variety of fruit.
Friday and Saturday the cannery waa swamped
With cherries, but tbe force worked through the
Pcurth and this morning had things cleared up
to start evaa with the growers who are constanUy
hauling in great load of the fruit. This wees
wil see the peak of the Royal Anses and Bing
crop and the larger part of the force will be
put to work on loganberries, says Hoyt. Tbe
loganberry juice factory has been started and a
eerload of the juice was shipped out yesterday.
The cannery has orders for 25.000 gallons of
loganberry Juice.
More than 1000 barrels of cherries have bean
pot up by the Maraschino process. There are
now 300 people employed.

market opened easier at a decline of 8 to 16
points. Prices at Liverpool were lower than
had -been expected, which, together with hedge
selling and heaviness in foreign exchange, chiefly
explained the setback here. On the declines
Wall street and the trade were fair buyers, but
at the end of the first 16 minutes the local
list was rather heavy at a net loss of 13 points
on October.
The market rallied late In the afternoon. Tbe
