Religious instruction has proven a
popular substitute fpr "readin wrlt
in and rithmetic." with the child
of Portland, acordlng to reports
from the dally vacation Bible schools
operating In various sections of the
city. With the school doors clsed
for the summer, the-chlldren seem to
welcome the open door of the church.
The Centenary-Wilbur Methodist va
cation Bible school oned last Monday
with an enthusiastic group of children
clamoring to bo- enrolled. The attend
ance has not taxed the capacity of the
church, but excellent results are report
ed. The recess period, which Is so pop
ular In the public school, is a side Issue
in this school, for the children, must fin
; Ish making1 cradles such as the baby
Moses slept In, or a model of the Inn at
Bethlehem. Primary and Junior work is
being; carried on extensively.
TEACHERS TO BE ENTERTAINED
i Features of next week's sessions will
be a musical on Wednesday by Professor
and Mrs. J. MacMillan Muir and a talk
by Miss Jennie Smith, a returned mis
sionary from India, on Friday.- The
teaching staff of 12, all volunteers, will
be entertained Thursday aftar school at
the Oregon Yacht club by Mrs. Lydla
Niete. Ko charge is made for the
school. " '
District No. 9 ochool opened Tuesday
at the Arleta public school building with
a i registration of 315, and promises: to
come close to the 500 mark before the
expiration of the term. Mount Scott
churches between Annabel and Flrland
are co-operating in this school. Mrs. J.
J. Handsaker is principals
i Rose City Park Methodist people look
for a doubled attendance at their school
next week which runs from 9 to 11 a. m.
daily. Dr. W. W. Huett Is pastor of the
church.
DEACONESSES HAVE SCHOOLS
Methodist deaconesses are conducting
two successful schools at the Central
Methodist church and at Friendly Cen
ter mission in Albina. Forty s children
are registered at the church and SO at
the mission.
One of xthe large east side schools Is
to open' Monday at, the United. Presby
terian Church of the Stranger, to which
all Irvlngton children have been invited.
Westminster Presbyterian and the First
Methodist ' church. South, are cd-operat-ing.
A. F. Bittner will be principal. The
school is for children between 5 and 14
years. : The school will run each day,
except Saturday and Sunday, from 9 to
12 for the next two weeks.
Hope Presbyterian church in Monta
villa will provide a Bible school Monday
for the children of that section of the
city. The 'school will continue for sev
eral weeks. .
St. Pauls Lutheran church will open
Its summer school Monday at ft a. m.
and hold sessions each school day until

Rector Jenkins Is
Prevailed Upon Not
. To Leave St. David's
Following a special ineeting of the ves
try of St Davids Episcopal church Fri
day night, at which Bishop W. T. Sum
ner was present, announcement was made
that the Re vj Thomas Jenkins had re
considered his resignation from parish
work and would not leave for mission
work in Alaska July- 1. -
The Rev. Mr. ' Jenkins had been made
archdeacon of Alaska to' assist the Right
Rev. : Rowe, ' bishop of . Alaska. Quick
action by the vestry .was necessary as
the .rector had packed some, of his
books!, which were to; leave soon.' The
vestry granted the rector a two months'
vacation, ; during which time he may
visit Alaska and do mission work, re
turning about September 1. Bishop Sum
ner will fill St. Davids pulpit on July 3
and on the following seven Sundays
other mfaisters will be secured.

night Bishop Sumner ' complimented the
rector on his record at St. Davids parish
and expressed the belief that It would

the bishop, parishioners and friends out
side the church caused the rector to re
consider his resignation.

Conferred
On Rev. Henry White
- ' .
The honorary degree of doctor of di
vinity was conferred upon : the Rev.
Henry White, pastor of the Millard Av
enue Presbyterian church, by his alma
mater on June 15 Dr. White has re
turned from Lake Forest college at Lake
Forest. 111., and will occupy his pulpit
Sunday. In addition to having the de
gree conf erred,i Dr. White was honored
by being asked to preach the bacca
laureate sermon at the commencement
exercises. After-graduation from Lake
Forest college Dr. White served the
Presbyterian church in Siam for 17
years, during which time he was head of
the- theological seminary at Chung Mel.
Tuesday evening Dr. White was ten
dered an Informal reception at the home
of Miss A. E. Hollingworth, when mem
bers Of the church congratulated him
upon his recent honor. ' "
Speakers' Bureau Is
Covering Wide Field
The speaker's -bureau of the laymen's
association of the Oregon conference of
the Methodist Episcopal church. Is fill
ing a long felt need - in church work.
Under the direction of L. D. Mahone,
secretary, prominent laymen who spe
cialize in certain lines of church work,
are sent to smaller churches throughout
the conference on Sundays to give lec
tures and conduct classes in their spe
cial line. Logging camps are also vis
ited, .where young, men are persuaded to
give up the idea of making money and
to return to school and , complete their
education. Special ' attention - is also
being paid to churches where the young
people's societies are weak. Methodist
churches in the Oregon conference desir

The Rev. William G. Eliot will speak
on the question. "Does the End Justify
the Means?" Sunday - morning at the
Church of Our Father. The church
school has been closed for the summer.
I New Christian Church
The i Portland i society of the New
Christian church (Swedenborgian) will
hold its closing summer service Sunday
in the assembly room of the Hotel Port
land. Following the sermon the Lord's
supper will be served by the Rev. Wil
liam R. Reece. The society will re
convene In September.

The Swedish Baptists of Oregon have
been holding their annual conference! at
the Swedish Baptist "church in this citv
luring the past few days. The sessions
wm close - tomorrow with an all-day
meeting starting at 10:15 a. m. with a
song and preyer service led by J. Sam
ueleon of Canby, followed by an address
by Rev." A. J. Stromana of Seattle. The
Sunday school session at 11:45 will be
followed by dinner served at 1 p. m.
The afternoon seadon will commence at 2:45
o'clock, when ReT. C. G. Seott will conduct the
none service. Four brief addresses will be eiven,
by C. P. Holt of Deep Creek, Hev. E. Bjorquist
of Warren. Bev. Andrew Johnson of Haley and

In his sermon Sunday morning at the
First Christian church, Rev. Harold H.
GrifXis will deal with what he considers
the one great universal vice, having for
his specific topic "The Jaundice or the
Soul." A special olea will be made for
the enlistment of the members in send
ing personal messages to Oregon con
gressmen to take action in the tragedy
of the Near Kast. i
In the evening the ordinance ' of Christian
baptism will be administered and the pastor will
discuss the recital, "The Sign of 'the Cross,'.'
given last Sunday evening by Ben Scovell. The
music for these services will be led by the
church quartet and will include the special so
prano number, "With Verdure Clad," from Han
del's "Creation." by Miss Kathryn Knsey, and
the baritone selection ''Beyond the Dawn" (San
derson), by Gus Cramer. ' " .
A program of sacred music under the di
rection of Maude Springer Bowen will precede
the aermon at the Roduey avenue Church of
Christ Sunday night. The choir wiU give the

Rev. Herbert Jones, pastor of the St. Johns
Christian church, was elected Multnomsh county
vice president of the Oregon Christian Missionary
society Wednesday to succeed Rev. S. M. Connor.
Plans were made- for a reception to be given for
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hendricks, who are "to
sail for Japan in August as missionaries of the
United Christian Missionary society. Hendricks
is a Portland boy and the Portland churches
hope to send him as a "living link": that is,
pay. his salary while he is on the field- There
were brief talks by the pastors in the city and
an address by Rev. J. Gordon Bennett on the
task of the church in the city. '

Members of Lincoln Methodist church are
locking forward to the time when a new build
ing will replace the present structure at Kat
Fifty-second' and Lincoln streets. A S15.000
edifice ia planned. At a banquet held a week
ago Friday night subscriptions were rasied to
4211. ; To this fund the Centenary baa agreed
to add $1500. Building will not be com
menced until three-fourths of the cost hat been

Rev. Abraham Vereide. -pastor of the First
Norwegian-Danish Methodist church in SeatUe,
will preach Sunday morning at' the Vancouver
Avenue Norwegian-Danish Methodist Episcopal
church and Sunday night at the First Norwegian
Danish Methodist Episcopal church. Tonight
he "will deliver a lecture at the Vancouver ave
nue church on the subject "The Supreme -Thrill
of Human Experience." Admission will be 25
cents and proceeds will be given to the mission
fund. Tuesday night he will seak. at the mis
sion sale iu the Vancouver avenue church.
During the seven months of which the board
of hospitals and homes of the Methodist Epis
copal church has been operating." four new hos
pitals have been planned - and four are under
construction. One new home for children has
been planned. The purchase has been made of
proijerty for the Retired Ministers' home. The
valuation of property added to all institutions
from July 1, 1920. to March. 1921, ia 13.034,
000. A total of 12 institutions is being planned,
the estimated cort of which when completed will
be about $15,000,000. ' '

bus, Ohio,' known as "the Quaker Holy
Ghost Preacher" ; and the Rev. Dave
Hill of Los Angeleej a strong holiness
preacher from the Evangelical church.
The music will be directed1 by Kenneth
Wells and Eunice Wells of Indianapolis.

held on the grounds at 3 p. m.'on July

APOSTOLIC CAMP
MEETINGS WILL
DRAW BIG CMS
The fifteenth annual camp meet
ing of the Apostolic Faith Mltmion
opens Sunday at the permanent
campgrounds at Kant Fifty-second
street and Sixty-fifth avenue south
east. Indications point to the largest
meeting In the history of tho mis
sion. People have already arrived from Kan
Francisco, Los Annelcs, St. Louis, Kan
sas City and Medford.) Ample accommo
dations huve bjeen made for taking cure
of the campers. i
The large new auditorium accommo
dating about 2000- people has been com
pleted. At night the front of the mam
moth, building will be flooded with llht
showing the 10-foot gold star and -the
words, "Jesus, the Light of the World."
The--meetings, beginning Kunday, will
continue for seven weeks. Services will
be held on Sunday at 10:30 a. m., 2:30
and 7:30 p. m. and each evening ,at 7.40.
Bible study wjll be held each afternoon
at Z :30, except Monday and Saturday,
after the first week.
The meetings will be conducted In the
"old fashioned" way. A song service
led by a 60-piece orchestra, will precede
each service. No collections will be
taken. Tables have been provided for
those who desire to bring their lunch
and spend the day on the camp grounds.
Church Convention
To Meet at Turner
The thirty-first -annual convention of
the Churches of Christ In Oregon and
the sixty-ninth annual gathering of Ore
gon Disciples of,Christ, will be held at
Turner, July 2 to 10. J. A. Bennett will
preside at the sessions and the Rev. C
V. Swander will act as secretary. Camp
ing privileges will be provided. Clergy
men and leading laymen In Oregon will
be the speakers.. No gate fee will be
charged this year.
