IN BETTER SHAPE
By Hyrnas H. Cortes
, Somewhat improved conditions are
showing in the market for canned sal
mon, although much, stock of the old
pack ia still wearily dragging for sale.
Developments recently in the canned
salmon" market have tended to improve
the buying generally. While this better
ment has beeri confined mostly to the
better stock, the demand has shown con
siderable Improvement for the ordinary
to poorer grades and varieties.
Since announcement was made of the
opening price On Columbia river spring
pack chinook at reduced figures, there
has been practical confirmation of pre
vious orders and additional business re
ceived has, been of sueh volume as to
practically sell the prospective pack for
the season. i
.: Latest advices indicate that 100 out of
203 Alaskan canneries are not being op
erated this season. Most of the closed
plants are in the sections where the pack
consists principally of pinks and chums.
As these two grades have been among
the most stagnant in the trade, the shut
ting off of a liberal portion of the normal
pack is likely to have a stiffening effect
upon values for the 1920 Output now go
ing begging.
Reports at present suggest a total
pack of about 2, 5 00. 000 cases In Alaska
for 1921. compared with 4,400,000 cases
a year ago. - The Columbia river pack
to date is very light and little hope
of a heavy output is entertained by
packers. -

Beneficial Association of the Pacific
. The conference in Seattle Wed
nesday afternoon disbanded in a
deadlock. - And delegates from Port
land. Seattle and San ' Francisco
started fori-their respective homes
'to take another vote.":
Advices received from Seattle last
night, stated that the Seattle local stood
strong for the acceptance of the scale
and conditions as subscribed to by
President W. S. Brown of the NaUonal
association. .According to W. S. Jack
ling, business agent of the Seattle union,
San Francisco. Portland 1 and Astoria
delegates sought to persuade Seattle to
reverse its action and reject the new
wage scale, but without effect:
The full text of the agreement en
tered into between Brown and the ship
ping board was presented to the dele
gates m conference. Seattle agreed and
could not be talked out of it. This
leaves the Pacific coast branch of the
engineers association with three mem
bers, two of them being weak ones., it
