Dep uty Sheriff E. iV Wicker pf Kalama and Smith, Tuesday evening about 7 o'clock; when he was fired upon in an effort to prevent -his escape.. Goforth and Charles Merkle, - also; of Kelso, delivered 30 gallons of moon shine whiskey to the officers, believing ton hill nar Carrol is, six miles south of : Kelso. The officers arrested the men but Ooforth broke loose and ran for the brush. i Shortly afterward Ooforth Called Fisher brothers Tauneh on the Columbia river at a point opposite the place of his escape and asked them to take him' to Kelso. They went as far i as Carrolls and he told them he had been shot at and was wounded three times. When he landed at Carrolls and started walking: toward Kelso they noticed that he limped. Their suspicions were aroused by his conversation and they notified the authorities in Kelso. - ' Merkle was taken to the county, jail at Kalama. where he is being held on a i bootlegger charge. About It o'clock Goforth appeared at the Dean Rulifson residence, two miles north of -Carrolls, and asked Rulison to assist him in getting to the. hospital at Kelso. : Mrs. J. M. Comer brought the wounded man in. He was shot tnree limes, twice in the back and once in the jejr. 'The two bullets In his back are VllI imbedded irj his' body. His condition is werioua. This is attributed to the fact that summer purchasers last ' year paid 'record high prices. .Philadelphia. June 21. The tonnage of bituminous coal handled by the Head Ing railroad for AprWwas 1,132,000 tona, the smallest of the year. 458,000 tons under April. 1920. The road hauls much coal to the Bethlehem steep plant and because of dullness in steel, the tonnage being handled now probably is below the April average. Better grades of bt tuminoua now are selling; at from $3.50 to S3. 75 per ton at the mine with the lower grades ranging from $2.10 to $2.30. DRUGS - New Orleans, June 22. Trade in drugs of this section is keeping up remarkably well and la fully equal to that of last year. Country trade is improving, but still Is about 20 per cent under the sales of 1920.
