Because of the recent shortage of but
ter In the South and the fact that the
local output is decreasing, the trade here
: again anticipates a fair volumes of busi
ness with California. ;
Ther t no doubt tiat.th "flisb" produc-
tion j period in butter has been reached and
. passed. Leading creamery interests her say that
their greatest output for th season wu a week
ago.- .Sine that time the market baa shown a
train decrease almost daily.
There la a generaDy steady ton indicated In
: th local market and both print and cube are
maintained in value, although there is appa
rently las urgent request (or butter from the
Booth. gome carload business confirmed last
week Is now being sent forward to the sou than
purchaser,' . . ... , .
The bureau of markets reviews th Ban Frsn.
euro situation for last week:
"Trading was aetar daring th past week la
th San Francisco batter market, and 92 score
advanced . from Friday to Friday. Th rw
- cent warm weather has caused a larger propor
tion! of medium and nndergradea, and fancy
batter. was hardly auffieient to go around. Short
held, goods were resorted to and several thou-
, sand pounds were withdrawn daily. Medium
grade sold (airly well, bowerer, and 90 score
ranged from Ve to 2e below 93 score. There
b little hope of lower prices, at least on the
tow seen, considering th good' storage snd
ecnmnpttTt demand and limited- supplies. Re
ceipt for th week show little change from last
week, althongh large shipments were received
from Oregon. Washington. Nevada and Montana.
Th into atorage movement daring the week
amounted to 137,743 pounds. The government
order tor 40.000 pounds win be filled within
the next two weeks, Th market closed firm.
"This week's batter market was similar to last
week, opening firm wlta advancing price under
aetiv trading op until Friday, when there was
a alight reaction on some markets. Demand
foe i eooanmpUrs purpose, continue strong and
baying for storage only eased up after price
got too strong. Out of town buyers on mar
: ket helping Tegular trade have cleaned up prac-
- tically all offering, including undergrade, supply
of which is unusually ligsit this year. Strongest
demand, of course, is foe long lines of fancy
' creamery and fin centralised cars. Expect some
heat detects In next week 'a shipments, bat pres
ent hot weather will also take more cream tor
lc cream purposes. : Production still increasing,
but most be near peak.1 . Market dosed a little
nnaettled but majority deaers think prices will
remain fairly steady at current level at least."
Thosei desiring special information "retarding
any. market should write the Market Editor,
'" Oregon Journal, enclosing stamp for reply.

: As slated recently- in this column, the
big "run" of strawberries Ig over for the
season. Both quality and Quantity, are
decreasing, and consumers must hurry U
they want good stuff.' Prices are a trifle
lower Tuesday, sales being" made at 31.35
1.50 per crate for 24 boxes, while the
15 box crates are sold proportionately
less. ;
Loganberries are- now arriving in quite
fair supply, but It will be about a week
before the supply , will be sufficient for
the canning stage. Therefore, it is best
to prepare. " . U,..,,, - . 1
. Raspberries are In slowly increasing
supply, and within a short time the out
put will be sufficient for canning. -
Small supplies of blackberries have
also reached the market, but they are too
high for the -average consumer. ; ft ;1
Meat prices 'continue to drop at whole
sale, but consumers continue to pay war
time values in some of. the retail shops.
One consumer writes me that retailers
charged 40c a pound for veal a teak: ; a
price out of all proportion to the cost at
wholesale. 'Beef '? prices, while lower
again at wholesale, are still in the avia
tion stage in , the retail shops. Moat
butchers are inclined to keep them there
as long as the public will pay the bill.

At the further cut in prices made late

Developments f 1st fs th livestock trade
her show - advers conditions - as regards the
heavier weight livestock. This applies to all
lines hogs, cattle and sheep.
State cattle were the only offerings in, the
North Portland alley at the opening of the
Tuesday morning trade.) There were a carload
arrivals overnight. I ,
Price losses of 1st ; hare been so sever in
rattle her that killers are buying at whatever
Srie they offer. Despite this the local market
just as favorable aa the eastern trade, freight
rate considered, but nality considered, Port
land Is on of the highest in th country for
the off-grade stuff. This may appear to be a
serious Joke to th shipper who sends forth a
carload or so ef cattle and receives but Bttl
for it. The fact remains that cattle price
are .in the sub-cellar at practically all points in
the country. i ;

- Hog prices are out of line locally. Eastern
markets continue to advance and on the basis of
what it is eostinc local killers to bring in sup

at least J5e to 9 tie higher. Killers are taking
hold of hogs at th price listed, bat the e-trem"-

the Tuesday trade because there was no diversion

Early trade In the Tuesday wheat
market was of substantial character but
there continues more or less apprehen
sion among the trade regarding the fu
ture of values.
That 81 a bushel is about all that may b
expected from the 1931 crop of wheat in this
territory la the opinion expressed by on of the
leaders of - th trad whoa logic lea aiding ths
1920 crop price has ban rsnsrkstay ' accamia
i It -begins to look as if export! will en.
deavor to pnrehaa considerable early delivery
staff at the dollar mark, 'bat there 1 apparently
no desire at th , moment to take oa contracts
for later delivery. (
It would be idle for anyone to claim to know
what wheat is going to sell at daring th next
crop season. All can guess snd th aaecessfal
guesser will say "I told yea as, bat it is a fact
that- the future Dries of wheat la lost as much
a mystery to tho big operators aa to the smaller
producer.'
Coars grain markets are - quiet along with
the alow trade in wheat.
Millataffs are firm and active at former pries.
While feedstuff ar considered about ateady.

Clover Is Down
Oats Heading Out
Much Too Rapidly
LeisyvUle. Or.. June 21: The hay harvest is
on her and many acres of clover down, but
the wet cool weather of this and last week is
not allowing the bay to cure as ft should, snd
there is liable to be much of it discolored if it
lays out in the rain many more days. Th yield
is very satisfactory.
Fall-sown oats is head dout, some of it being
not more than a foot in j height. Farmers are
not expecting a vary good yield from this crop.
Farmers are puzxled as to why the oats are
heading eat so much sooner than usual, as the
moisture has been ample this year. Usually a
dry, hot spring wiQ cause oats to head oat pre
maturely, but rarely do they head out this early
in a wet, cool spring such ss this has been.

baa been slow for the past two months
and sail tonnage has been a drug. The
schooners Oregon Pine and Oregon Fir
are on the disengaged list at Portland
and -there is any quantity of idle ton
nage in the harbor at San Francisco,
The Japanese steamship Kongosan
Maru is working lumber at Portland for
the Orient, and the regular line steamers
of the Pacific Steamship company and
the Columbia Pacific Shipping- company
are going out with full booking's.
ANOTHER ' f A PAXES E VESSEL
CHARTERED TO CARRY WHEAT
Kerr, Gifford & Co, have fixed the
Japanese steamship Meiwu Maru of the
Mitsui line, wheat for the United King
dom or the continent and June loading.
The Melwu Maru is one of the Mitsui
boats and is one of the largest carriers
of that line to be placed in the grain
trade.- -
Japanese are slipping into the grain
business in place of the British and the
Swedes. - The vessel announced yester
day is the fourth on the grain list. Tbe
Port Said Maru and the Boston Maru
are in the harbor and working and will
figure In the June clearances. The
Ryufuku Mara will not put in an ap
pearance before July.
With the end of the eereat year nine
days off and the volume of,tonnage that
is working;. June will wind up the year
as one of the heaviest months of the
season. The strike situation - in May
set that month back to some extent, al
though .most "of the offshore business
was handled In- foreign, bottoms.
There will be no cessation of grain
shipments during: the summer months.
There is enough old crop wheat left to
keep things on the move until new crop
is ready to move.
