Asparagua is aaite olentlful and al

the sales at retail are still around 20c

ber that a bunch of asparagus ia e

some of the Japanese growers are dis

Weather . Is Too
Cool for Crops
During the Week
Oregon Weather waa rather too cool for
rapid development of vegetation, and freezing
tempera rare occurred in elevated eastern dis
tricts. In northwestern counties farm work wsa
delayed by wet weather, says Edward L. Weils
of the Portland weather bureau.
Winter wbeat and rye are doing well. Rye is
beading in Columbia county snd wheat is in the
boot in jsckaon county. Seeding of spring wheat,
oats snd barley continues, and in elevated eastern
districts a considerable acreage remains to be
sown. Larty sown spring grain is doing well.
Corn planting is becoming mora general. In
Douglas county some early planted corn rotted
and replanting will be aecesssry.
Apples are blooming freely but conditions hare
not been altogether favorable for pollination. and
spraying bas been delayed by wet weather. Pears
are dropping heavily in Jackson county, and the
drop of prunes in parts of the Willamette valley
is serious. Ripenic of strawberries has been
delsyed by cool, ik tidy weather, but a few have
been rumketed in Douglas county.
Alfalfa ia making better growth, hot Still
needs warmer weather. Other bay crone are
doing well, although retch is somewhat affected
by aphis. Feed on the range is good to excel
lent Shearins cf sheep is extending to eastern
counties. Lamh-ng is Bearing completion. 11
stok is doing weiU
Potato Planting ia becoming more general.
Early potatoes arc growing fairly wall: Gardens
arc showing improvement, but need wanner
weather. Hops are being plowed.

Cold storage operations In the butter
market are unusually heavy at thin time,
indicating that leading interests are of
the opinion that prices have either struck
the bottom, or are close to it.
Within a couple of weeks Portland placed ever
28,000 pounds of butter in storage. . Operations
became heavier the present week ' when over
J s.uuu pounds waa placed in local ice bouses.
On the other hand. Seattle showed less butter in
storage at the end of tbe Dresent week than
two weeks ago. This is believed due to the fact
that the Puget Sound cities nave been hampered
in getting stock because of the marine strike and
the storage goods went into consumption.
At the moment there is a liberal degree " of
strength in the local butter situation. No price
changes were announced for the day, and while
on cooperative organization is said to be shading
its prices below the regular market, private
creamery interests say they are able to maintain
their values, and continue the price of butterf at.

In" general the grain and breadstuff
market is marking time just now, so
far fts the local situation is concerned.
Little business Is passing for wheat, al
though the, early Wednesday prices
were somewhat Improved throughout
the country generally,
Foreign Interest in the wheat market appears
to be lacking at the moment, due to the fear
that the present advance cannot be maintained.
Sentiment appears to be aided somewhat by the
marine troubles in Argentine, but the European
trade expresses similar fears regarding the out
come of the American situation. '
Wheat growers are by no means disposed to
accept the lower price of recent days for their
grain. Having held thus far they feel that a
few days more or less will make . no material
difference.
Scramble for coarse grains is pehsrved to be
due to the California situation.
