Further cuts In the price) of canned
goods by some of the. department stores
as well as by cash and carry groceries
are shown,, and soma of the residence
retailers are changing their prices.
Fact of the matter is that many of
the grocers are not inclined to do their
share of the period of readjustment of
prices by taking their losses as has bean
done by wholesalers and manufacturers
generally. : j y ' - -, ;
It developes that the retailers who pay
no profit to the wholesaler and purchase)
direct are in many Instances charging
more for their foodstuffs than the deal
ers who. purchase through the. regular
channels. In other words some of the
retailer-wholesalers are taking the prof
its of both wholesaler and retailer.
Enormous increase in sales of so-called
twin loayes of bread at 12 to 15 cents for
two pounds is shown. In fact the pub
lic has responded so freely to the offer
Lng of the twin stock that the sals of
the lower priced stock Is, beginning to
interfere with the business in wrapped
stock. ' The latter is - said to be of no
better material or baking than the lower
priced stock and consumers cannet eat
the wrappers, for which they are payinj
big money. J !
There la an extreme scarcity of cauli
flower or broccoli oh the market and
prices are generally higher, while aspar

POTATO BUYING A
VERY SLOW AFFAIR
nd of the potato buying season in
big lota is near at band in Oregon and
Washington so far as shipments to out
sid a points are concerned. This is Indi
cated by the progress made in the new
crop and In the lack of operations of
old growth. ' '
While occasional earload business Is reported
at local eenntry points arennd 81 for extreme
quality Borbank type stock, it appears that
tli south has about as many eariuads of old
Oregon-Washington stock at this time as it
cares to owa.
New stock la coming vsrvrard very freely from
California growing centers, both the north and
the south shipping.' This has resulted In gen.
ral price declines. While new stock is still
quoted st figure which maka it impossible for
the average family to purchase, still there is a
grewing distribution of sncb offerings, all of
which affects the price and sale of old growth.
It should not be construed that the season
for old potatoes is over, for such is not ths
ease. Old stock will be seeded and uied for
several months, but in decreasing volume. . , :

British! interests are taking on addi
tional stocks of flour at this time but
are able to purchase almost at their
own price. While millers have stiffened
their price views somewhat aa a result
of recent advances in wheat, still . all
appear- anxious, to secure export orders.
Reports j indicate the receipt of small volume
of flour orders from Central and South America
but this is almost too limited to note. IjocsI
flour trade Ehows a stimulated tone as a result
of the previous day's advance of 40c a barrel,
but bakers; are slow buyers because of their fear
that the price will not hold.
Wheat price are showing a disposition to
ease off fractionally, but such conditions is
fo!iowed quickly by export orders. Japan is
said to have practically quit the wheat market

Many Factors Are
JTamed as Slowing
Business Eecovery
- ., i - -
The publisher of a leading business
magazine, an acknowledged authority
on financial and commercial affairs,
attributes the delayed recovery in busi
ness to the following factors ;
(IX, Uncompleted liquidation of labor.
(2) Unexpectedly poor showing made by
the railroads under new railroad law
coupled with apprehension that labor
troubles impend. (1) Delay tn reducing
prices by many basic industries. (4) Un
foreseen delay in starting : the machinery
to extend credits to. foreign purchasers.
(5) Retention of high money rates for a
period almost without parallel In finan
cial annals. (6) Failure of "retail trade
as a whole to lower prices commensurate
with drastic declines in wholesale prices.
(7) Acute dissatisfaction in Influential
circles because of tax burdens and the
absence of any definite plan in Wash
ington to effect thoroughgoing reform
and economy. (S) Tariff uncertainties.
This authority regards these factors
in the order named as the important, in
fluences which are now curtailing busi
ness. He declares, however, that con
ditions are slowly getting better.

conditions, Secretary of the Treasury

loans upon banks are becoming lees, the
secretary said, and banks find .condi

ditions, however, do not tend to indicate
any rapid return to normalcy. Seasonal
increases n business are shown in some
indttstrtea. but generally banks report
that payroll requirements are becoming
somewhat leas, v., .
