- AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK IN
M-ARJCET
DASKJET
tarcML pBxzXa
By Hfnii H, Coses .
Has the general public war-time or
profitering appetite? The average re
tail butcher will tell you so. but I have
recently taiked with a number of house
wives wbo ! say that the retailers are
talking for; effect.
For instance the butchers claim that
he publics appetite is confined almost
exclusively to roasts, steaks and hops
and that It passes by the boiling meats
that are just as good and much cheaper.
Retailers claim this is the reason why
the must charge the high price for the
better cuts because they find so little
demand for the cheaper stock. House
wives on the other hand claim that the
butchers always advance the price of
the less desirable cuts w henevet . the
public shows a demand for such stock.
In any event butchers all over the
country make the same claim against
the public's appetite as do the local re
tailers. For instance the Institute of
American Meat Paackers sends out this
cry of alarm
' "Although wages, have been reduced,
business has been contracted, purchasing
power has been lessened and millions of
men are reported idle, yet most consum
ers are still discriminating against the
less expensive cuts of meat and continu
ing their wartime preference for steaks,
chops and roasts..
"That circumstance constitute an odd
feature of the meat situation at the pres
ent time. I - '
"It bad -been expected that any de
crease in wages or employment would
Und to increase sharply the demand for
forequarter meats. Instead, the socalled
choice cuts still enjoy a great prefer
ence, and meat that is equally nutritious
and palatable Is moving sluggishly at
very much lower prices. .
"This is true of beef, lamb and pork.
Rarely has there befn such a spread in
price between popular cuts which can
be prepared quickly 'and cuts which are
used, for example, in making pot roasts,
stews, etc The housewife who knows
how to cook chuck - steak, corned beef.
lamb stewJ pot roasts and similar dishes
now finds - herself in position to obtain.
unusual bargains in those retail stores
and they no doubt are in the majority
which have adjusted their prices to
the new wholesale levels.
"Exolanation of the continued prefer
ence for the "choice" cuts at a time like
tills probably lies in the fact that whole.
tale meat prices have declined more than
most prices, and all classes of meat, in
eluding the popular cuts, are still readily
available even to those whose purchas
ing power has been reduced.
The following prices rule generally in retail
shops for good quality. Some ealuea are frac
tionally higher, inferior stuff fractionally lower.

TUBER MOTH GETS
BY REGULATIONS
By Uyman H. Cohen
Indicating the stern necessity for the
state of Oregon in taking strenuous
Treasures to combat t?e dreaded tuber
moth that comes with the California po
tato actrly in the season, is the fact that
despite all precaution, tuber moth in
fected stock is actually bcLnc offered in
the Portland market-
Tbrn embargo aoUes earned by &m state Wed
nesday and published in t&is paper, was scarcely
dry before it was discovered that no small task
has been apportioned to the official wbo hare
charge of uiorcing the proUctare laws of the
state. . .- '
Tha Market Editor of The Journal, Just to
see bow the inspection was working, picked op a
number ef the new erno California stack. The
second potato gathered abowed the tell tale
" bole of th tuber moth. Tha potato Beans
split showed the moth lying there as snug aa
possible despits the fact that this potato ss
well as others had been officially inspected and
pi sued ss clean and free from the dreaded insect-
No eritietKm is msde against inspectioa offi
cials for thus .overbooking the tuber moth in
fected stock. It is impossible for tha officials
with their present fore or even witn reason
able one, to make a thorough inspection of each
shipment. To do so, every potato must bo elosely
examined for it is not always the habit of the
tuber moth to invade the very potato that the
insperor will pick up for examination.
Criticim is shown sgsinat the Intent order of
the state because it suit leaves the question up
in the sir. The potato trade says that cither
the California stork should stop coming here or
else too bayers be assured that their legitimate
purchases be not condemned. ;

TRADERS RETURN
TO LOAD WHEAT
Captain H. Jacubson and Chief
Officer A. Musaens of the Danish
motorship Indien, in from the Orient
and under charter to Houser. to load
wheat for the continent, are old
traders ia Portland. Captain Jacub
son was chief officer of the Keen
in 1912 and his present mate was as
A. B. with him at that time.
The Ihdien sailed from Yokohama for
Portland April. 2 and made the river, in
17 days, an average speed across the Pa
cific of better than 200 miles a day. On
tbe second day out from the Japanese
port the Indien bit a typhoon and for
3C hours played in hard luck. The baM
ance of the voyage was heavy weatner
but the ' wind was fair and the gas boat
turned along at a goodly speed.
Captain Jacubson states that business
in Japan is Improving. Merchants are
now able to secure satisfactory letters
of credit and can buy without delay.
There Is a great demand tn japan ror
wheat and flour and lumber and with
tbe look up In the money market there
is a' big chance for Oriental business
from Pacifla coast ports. ;
During tbe past two weeks there has
been a big movement to the West Coast
of South America in the cereal line and
indications are that: there will be a
steey export trade to the Antipodes up
until tbe time new crop grain comes in.
MTJCJI GRAW BEWG BIOVEP
OVERSEAS FROM PORTLAND
With seven grain carriers in- the river
for grain loading within the next 10
days, two already gone and eight more
for early May loading, the foreign busi
ness for the port looks well over tbe top
of neighboring ports. The bulk of the
wheat for export will go to the united
Kingdom. Two cargoes are booked for
Italyf and one for Copenhagen In Den
mark.
Houser has taken the British steam
ship Benledl for Portland loading about
the middle of May. A drop in the ship
ping board rates of from & to 10 shillings
a ton has opened up a new bunch of
business and charters are looked for
dally, i
The shipping board made tbe drop to
meet the competition of foreign vessels.
The latter were operating on a basis
cf COs U. K. while the board rata was
10s above that.
The seven vessels now In Portland for
grain cargoes are : Asia, Norwegian mo
torship; Hahley, American steamship;
Indian. Danish motorship: West isomen
turn. Statesman, -'American steamship ;
Eastern Guide. American steamship j
Moerdyk, Dutch steamship. The total
amount of net tonnage of the seven ves
sels is 27,27. with a carrying capacity of
