to cause holders to desire to hold the freeh stork
to level where the storage can be sold without
luting too much money.
Those desiring special Information regarding
any market should write , the Msrket Editor,

Consumers ars eatlngr about 30 to 85
per cent less meats than at the start of
the year, according; to one of the leading;
retail butchers. Just what la wrong with
the meat consumption this retailer waa
unwilling: to say, but ha knew that busi
ness was dwindling, not only at his own
place, buC at other shops.
; Consumers - appear to have rot away
from eating; meat ion such an extensive
scale as In previous years, ' There are
various conditions to fore such a con
clusion. The great number of men out
of employment Is perhaps the greatest
factor, but business conditions today are
such that the average consumer is no
longer on a spending spree and is much
more careful In buying. ;
To the credit of the average butcher
It must be confessed that he is not ask
ing an extreme price for meats at this
time. r Irt fact, in some of the downtown
markets where cash and carry rule, sales
are actually being made either at cost, a
fraction below it, or 23c a pound above
the cost figures, i
Fresh asparagus la today In quite fair
supply and the price is slowly dropping.
Sales at retail are shown at 40c a pound
generally for best Quality.
Artichokes are a4so in fair supply with
the best selling at 15c in the retail shops.
