era evangelists and their choir di
rector have arrived in the city, eager
to jump into the great campaign be
'fore them.
The evangelists are the Rev. U. E.
Hardin of Indianapolis and the Rev.
Bona Fleming of Ashland, Ky. The
choir director is Professor R. A. Shank of
Cincinnati. Tha latter will be assisted
by Mrs. Shank In special solo work, by
a local choir of 150 trained voices and
by three singing evangelists from Indi
ana, E. M. Cornelius, O. B. Myers and
James Campbell.
This stupendous campaign has been
undertaken by the five Naiarene
churches of Portland, with the Rev. A.
M. Bowes of First church as the leader.
They have made use of many means of
publicity in an effort to let the people
of Portland 'know of the special meet
.infrs. The Rev. Mr. Bowes is chairman of
the press committee. FY IX Luae ar
ranged for noon shop meetings where
the announcement was made, and placed
cards in downtown store windows and
on streetcars. Mrs. R. L. Russell had
charge of a force of youg women who
gave invitations to the meetings to em
ployes in large stores.
C. W.. Carlson arranged for display
advertising on billboards. In addition
2000 invitations have been mailed to the
clergy, Sunday school superintendents
and prominent people of the city. As
a final effort three street meetings will
be held on downtown corners tonight.
Two thousand song books have been
purchased so that the audience can sing.
Services will be held each night at
7:30 o'clock and every afternoon at 2:30
except Sunday,. Monday and Saturday.

A Protestant weekday' Bible school,
the first of its kind in the city, was
organized last Tuesday afternoon at
Central Methodist church by Miss Mar
tha Buck, director of religious education
for the church.
The school will meet for on hour's
study each Tuesday at 4 o'clock. Regis
tration on the first day was very satis
factory. Miss Buck said. For the pres
ent instruction will be Riven only to
children between 10 and 12 years of acre
but the church hopes to secure more
workers and then to enlarge the work.
Enlargement may call for classes on
other days.
Bible instruction which cannot be
given on Sunday is given the children
in the week day clam, such as a course
in church music, Bible stories, Bible
memory work and directed play. Before
the school was started the district was
surveyed under the direction of the Rev.
Alexander R, Maclean, pastor, and the
cooperation of the parents assurred.
Coleman to Speak
Norman Coleman, secretary of the
Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumber
men, will be the speaker Sunday night
at the Portland Church Federation forum
in the Central library. . He .will speak

The society for ' spreading the knowl
edge of true prayer meets every Monday
at 8 p. m. in the Blue room, Portland

Moody Bible Institute of Chicago to prepare
for Christian work.

CHRISTIAN
A union meeting of the eigrht Christian
churches in the city was held February
15 at the Church of Christ, when the de
tails for a united campaign among the
churches was presented. The, campaign
will emphasize church attendance and
evangelism.
A series of seven evangelistic meetings wilf be
held, starting in St. Johns Christian church.
February 27, and closing in the East Side
Christian church. April 24. Each meeting will
continue for two weeks, the first week meet
ing in each church being simultaneous with the
second week meeting of the preceding church
in the series. Visiting pastors will conduct the
services during the first week of tha meetings
in the local churches. The city missionary.
Rev. Joseph Boyd, will conduct the second week
meetings. The members of all the Christian
churches in the city will be urged to support
these second week meetings.
The order in which the churches will hold
meetings will be: St. Johns Christian, Taber
nscle Christian. Montavilla Christian, Church
of Christ, Kern Park Christian, Seliwood Chris
tian and East Side Christian. The First Chns
tisn church will not participate in the evangel
istic phaae of the campaign, because of prepara
tions which are being made for the erection of
a new building.
A series of leaflets will be given out each
Sunday morning during the entire campaign
which wiU urge upon the members of the
churches the obligation of chnrch attendance.
Each Sunday will be observed uniformly among
all the churches emphasising various Christian
activities and themes. These will be: A. McLean
memorial, shut-in. whole family, Easter, neigh
bor, stewardship, periodical and Bible schooL
8unday will be ob.-rved at the First Chris
tian church aa "Stewardship Sunday." by tha
Bev. Harold H. Griffis. The superintendent of
stewardship, Kev. S. M. Conner, will present
each worshipper literature bearing on the theme
at the clone of the service. The" Bible school
has just pledged itself for further financial as
sistance in the China famine relief. In addi
tion to the 11500 offering made at Christmas
for relief in Europe and Asia, a new pledee of
$500 has been made for China, to be paid by

day from British Columbia where they have
spent the past several weeks, during which the
Kev. Mr. Sawyer gave a series of lectnres on

Captain Merton Smith and the Rev. Mr. Saw
yer. The Kev. Mr. Sawyer ia the former pas
tor of the East Side Christian church and he
will occupy tlw pulpit of that church Sunday

ing a talk on famous church hymns snd their
authors at Highland Congregational chnrch This
Sunday night he will discuss "Lead. Kindly
Light." Steps are being taken for the forma
tion of a Boy Scout troop.
The boys and girls of the First Congrega
tional church are discussing the support of a
student at the denomination's seminary on the
island of Mindanao, which ia the island In the
Philippine group assigned to Congregationalista.
The cost will be $250 per annum.
EPISCOPAL
A service mainly for men and boys will
be held Sunday night at St. David's Epis
copal church. Joseph W. Ganong and
Clarence Porter, laymen, will be the
speakers. The parish troup of Boy
Scouts and their friends will attend in a
body. St. Andrew's Brotherhood and the
Men's Community club will also attend.
The rector will preach in the morning.

A very hopeful spirit is reported among
the Presbyterian . pastors of Portland
and surrounding: territory by the Kev.
Walter M. Irwin, New Era secretary
for Oregon. Washington svnd Idaho, who
has Just returned from a trip over the
area. All are looking- forward to a great
ingathering on Easter Sunday.
The pastors will emphasize steward
ship this Sunday. An effort will be
made to secure many enrollments in
the "Fellowship of Stewardship."
Plans are also being made for the
every member canvass on March 8, as
the executive commission has recom
mended this date to all the churches.
The commission has also set $12,000,000
as the national New Era budget for
the year beginning April 1. 1921. Of
this amount the quota of the ?ortIand
presbytery is $65,785. The preshyterial
part of this sum is $15,136. Part' of
this money will be spent for the support
of student pastors at Eugene and Cor
vallis. The church extension society of
the Portland presbytery will have access
to $22,000 to be used in helping churches
tributary to Portland.
Vesper and Bible
Classes Will Meet
The Warren Bible class of the First
Presbyterian church will join with the
vesper class Sunday afternoon at 4
o'clock in a union meeting for the pur
pose of making arrangements for cocial
affairs. Mrs. Blanche Williams Seger
Bten, soprano of the church auartet,
will be the soloist and will sing several
numbers. The orchestra, with Victor
De Pinto as director and M.- A. Howard
as accompanist, will render two classical
numbers. Clinton O. Bay will conduct
a song service before opening the pro
gramt and Dr. Angela L,. Ford Warren
will give a brief lecture on "The Rapid
Rise to Power." Young men and women
away from their homes are especially
invited to enter this circle, where in
dividual advancement along all lines is
prominently featured. The doors will
be opened to the public at 4 o'clock.

history of Oregon Endeavorlsm. Under ,
the direction of W. C. Whltaker and Dr.
Helen Gilkey entertainment on the Harv
ard plan was provided for all delegates.
To prevent a Jam at the registration
desk a committee from Corvallis met the
Portland train half way from Portland
artd had rooms assigned to all delegates ,
before Corvallis was reached. O. A. C.
officials also cooperated with the hdus
lng and sight seing committees.
The total 1321 budget raised was $3620.
All the state officers were appointed a
committee to arrange for the entertain
ment of the 1923 world's convention in
Portland, should Oregon be able to cap
ture the event at the 1921 world's con
vention In New York.' The convention
also decided to continue the summer con
ferences, which were started last
summer. -
