STEAMER HERM10N
IS RE-CHARTERED
BY KERR-GIFFORD
The No rwefri&n steamship Herml-
n,' Newport News for Portland, has
been reehartered by! Kerr-Gff ford &
Co. for wheat for ; the United King
dom. The Hermion ls in at Astoria,
crossing in yesterday afternoon, too
late to make the charter date pre-
vlously fixed by the)
eame exporting
firm.
Differential In the
rata between the
original charter and the party Just
closed has not been jtnade public, but
in the opinion ot ehtpprnjr men the new
charter is . less by j several shillings.
Another race for charters is that of
the 61am, a Norwegian motorship, now
rushing for Vancouver B. C.
The Biaml is also under charter to
Kerr-Gifford. In order to save the
'rate and original charter, the Siam
took on dunnage at ;th Golden Gate,
and also a -crew of liners. If nhe makes
"Vancouver by noon (tomorrow and is
ready to take cargo,) the charter will
be saved to the owners. If she fails,
the charter party will lose many thou
bands of collars.
Heavy weather has
fnut during the oast
prevailed off the
two days and the
distance to he run between San Fran
Cisco and Vancouver has the water front
contingent in a gambling mood. Bets
were made this morning: that she would
not make the time and were taken. A
northwest blow above Cape Mendicino
would hold f her back I and snow equals
In the straits would hinder.
