THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND,
FRESH FISH NOW
' SCARCE! TRADE
: Unexpected decrease in offerings of
Columbia river smelt la shown at hlm
time. Fishermen have lost track of the
school and for that reason there wm a
famine of offerings during the day. The
limited stocks were selling at 10 cents
a pound.
Oood quality frenh salmon Is very
scarce and there is only a small supply
of "fresh halibut available. The latter
is unusually high priced -at 35 cents a
pound In the retail shops.
Retailers have plenty of fresh crabs
which are selling at former prices. There
are few razor' clams offering. Most of
these are in down town markets and
are selling at 35c a dozen for the small
size and 50c for the larger clams.
Fair, Increase in home grown spinach
stocks' is shown on the public market
with sales at 10c a pound.
Home grown cauliflower is selling in
a limited way at 20c a bead for small
sizes, but the California stock of- larger
size is higher. . :
Consumers in buying canned salmon
should look carefully at the label. The
Variety of the fish should be shown if
it is to be considered first class stock-

L C. 0. Grants Right
To Operate United
Railway Properties
Washington. Jan. 28. (WASHINGTON
BUREAU OP THE JOURNAL) The
interstate - commerce commission has
granted the Portland. Astoria tc Pacific
lull road company the right to acquire
and operate the United Railway company
line in Multnomah county.
The applicant company provides, for
common carrier operation at a rental of
355,000 per year, the United Railways
company to provide maintenance and
pay taxes. Steam is to be substituted
for electric operation.
Granting of the application is based
. upon recommendation by the public! serv
ice commission of Oregon, Commissioners
Meyer, Daniels. Eastman and Potter,
approved It, saying:
Capitalization of the applicant is
$2,500,000, of which , approximately
$1,000,000 has been expended in construc
tion of applicants line up to July 31.
J920. Kuch capital' stock is owned by
the Oregon American Lumber company
and. by D. C. Eccles and his associates
of Oregon , and Utah. It is not shown
that applicant has any resources other
than paid up capital. The record is
practically barren with respect to the
probable volume of traffic which will be
handled by applicant over its own line
and the line in question and as to prob
able revenues from such traffic. How-
ever, we are advised by the public ser
vice commission of Oregon that the in
terests which control the applicant will
market approximately 2,750,000 feet of
lumber over the line in question and the
state commission believes applicant's op
erations will be financially successful."
SnelTs Forestry

By Phil W. Ayers
Washington, Jan. 28. (U. P.) A
"dance of death" for which the public

American forests, Phil W. Ayers of the
Society for Protection of New Hamp
shire Forests told the house agricultural
committee Thursday.
E. T, Allen of Portland, Or., speaking
for the National Lumber Manufacturers'
association. Indorsed the Snell bill, which
outlines a forestry program ' which' In
cludes spending $1,000,000 annually in
cooperation with state in fire preven
tion, and $10,000,000 annually for forest
lands. .:..- .-. .;
