THE OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, SUNDAY MORNING, JANUARY, 16. 1921. MAN ARRESTED AS SHADOW QUICKLY PROVES AN ALIBI Vew Angle Connects, Mysterious Letters With Those Penned by the "Talkative Burglar.0 (Continued From Pag. One.) 7 contained first naturalization papers made out November 21; 19141 at Lamoille, Nev. He came to the United States from Goscob, Austria, in 1900. BertiHion Kxpert Jimmy Hunter took finger prints of the suspect and none tonformed -with a finger print found on the inside Of a lunch box found in Frl- av tnnrnln:'! ! encounter with 'The TO CHECK VP OS ALIBI To check up on the alibi of the sus pect that he had worked on the nlsht shift at Orepon City during the desper ate career of the blackmail plotter. In spectors took Kiernal to the paper mill town late Saturday night. In the nrteantibie police are consider ing1 another "angle connecting '.'The Shadow" with tlje "talkative burglar." Proof linking! the Identities of. "The Shadow" and - the "talkative burglar" was uncovered, Saturday afternoon fol lowing: comparison of communications received by victims of the dual charac ter, who now appears as arch-plotter of both burglary 'and blackharid: Further proof has been revealed that the police guard blackmail communica tions jealously because "The Shadow" has- made threats- of a horrible death through employment of a new expedi ent; a new scientific method of anni hilation, "from which there' is no es cape." Still further proof has been discov ered that this tew character in crime ta a comparative stranger In the city who has been working for more than six weeks on minor'' "jobs" to get the 'lay of -the town" and plan for hft big coup. AH this was brought out as. a result of a meeting of Roseoe C. Nelson, prom inent attorney and victim of the "talk ative burglar," s and Will K. Lipman, merchant and recipient of a letter from "The Shadow." j BOTH GET LETTERS i i ,". Nelson and Lijpman each received let ters from the individual characters as sumed by the plotter and the letters coincide in every detail as to writing, rhetoric and formation of characters. The two citizens we're thrown together at a society gathering recently. I Be tween them the details were worked out today. ' r These new phases which the police seem to be absolutely unaware of came as a result of Lipman's having. held the turning it over to the police. So far as a iv i i vy " ii 1 1 j u: luo win win; v. t n " who did not place the threat received by him in the hand of the authorities Immediately.! ! In j the letter received "by Lipman, "The, Shadow" threatens extermination to members of hie family. Lipman Is a bachelor and lives by himself. This, connected with the fact that some other intended victims of the blackmailer were either dead or financially unable to meet the demands,: marks him as a stranger. CALLS SCIEJTCEj TO AID; The letter also warns that any pro tection which might be thrown up about picked victims would be of no avail because science had uncovered new ways of administering death which could not be forestalled. ' That the" letters of "The Shadow and the 'talkative burglar" are identical is vouched for by Nelson, who has seen communications sent by the arch-plotter in each of his dual roles. If the police have been conducting; any adequate investigation they will readily realize also that through the' talkative burglar's" experience with Nelson he built the foundation for his new character of "The Shadow." HIS FIKST APPEARANCE On the morning of December 13 at S :30 o'clock, the "talkative burglar" en tered the home of Nelson at 293 Aspen street through a back door, inadvertent ly left unlocked. This was the first ap pearance of; the super-criminal. Conversing freely with his victims he ransacked the home, taking about $1000 worth of jewelry and a small amount of cash. This, too, was the only time that a fair description was obtained of the "talkative burglar." - Two days after the visit of the early morning prowler Nelson received a pack age containing a few of the less valu able trinkets. This was evidently intended as a ruse to build up the confidence of the "talka tive burglar's" victims, for a short time later Nelson received a letter from the man The letter said that if Nelson would place $100 at some chosen spot.'a highly prised solitaire diamond would be re turned to him. Through two subsequent telephone conversations Nelson arranged to meet the "talkative burglar" half way. NEL80X PROMISES $10 ' Nelson I arranged to drive out Twelfth street late at night a snort time late and drop a package containing $100. For this the; burglar promised to return he solltaireJ 1 TVia r.lar imnnil fnr the derjosit of Ahe money was between Washington and Alder streets on -rweirin. - ins money was dropped, but the diamond was never Noisnri then turned over the fetter of the burglar to the police. Through a review or tne ourgiary i the Nelson home it was revealed . that the talkative burglar had an accomplice. Nelson told the police at that time he had seen a second man at the house. Through the successful manner In which the plan of dropping money from an automobile worked on "Nelson, tne master criminal evidently believed he could work a major blackmail plan on the same' basis. . . VOICE IS ONLY DIFFERENCE In all the comparison of the two char acters only one divergence appears and that is in the matter of accent. The words of the "talkative burglar" were described by his several victims as be ing well' modulated and showing evi dence of education. The words of "the shadow" were supposed to have been spoken with a German Inflection. Of this latter phase, the fact that the "talkative burglar" and; therefore, prob ably "The Shadow!" has an accom plice, would account for the difference of speech. Or it might have been that the deputies who heard him speak Fri day morning did not get the Inflection of the plotter's command interpreted correctly. : : ' ; t"he deputies who , encountered the man said he was about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighed 140 pounds and wore a dark suit. Newspaper files disclose the de scription given by the Nelsons of the "talkative burglar" as a man 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds and wearing a dark suit. NATURE OF TNOTES With little attention being paid to the other recipients of blackmail letters while the limelight focused on J. Wes ley Ladd and his two arranged encoun ters with the plotter, the public has al most lost sight of the nature the threat ening notes might have assumed. Some 6t Lipman's friends who saw tie letter received by him before it was shown to Nelson and- subsequently to the police, say that it asked for $25,000 in $5. $10 and $20 bills. TJie letter threatened members of Lip man's family and said in effect : "No matter what protection you may surround yourself with, you will not be safe. There are new ways of adminis tering death. New discoveries of .sci ence during the late war have provided mfans of extermination against which there Is no guard." This message, like the others received by the- other six recipients of threaten ing letters, was signed "The Shadow." . Letters received by J. Wesley Ladd have been turned over to the postal au thor! ties for action. Ladd has left the city, was learned yesterday. In addition to being liable under the state extortation law. "Shadow" la also liable for violation of the federal postal laws. .-'!.''' Apparently the only department of the government which has been lotitied of ficially about the threatening letters Is the postal Inspector's office The United States attorney's office and chief .North west operative of the department of Jus tice had not been requested up to Satur day -night to lend any assistance in the case, even though the federal statute has been violated. The Portland police de partment, and especially Captain Harry Circle, seems to have but little use for the department of Justice agents, since they -unraveled the scandal that was pro duced in die federal court during the War Saving Stamp trial, in which Rob ert La Salle, former police inspector, was a co-defendant with Fred Peterson, alias Swede Wltey, an- ex-convict, and several north end secondhand merchants. BRTON LNCOTERS FACTS Through the work of department of justice agents under the qpmmand of W. U. Bryon, testimony was produced in the federal court that j several Port land detectives knew altered and pos sibly stolen War Savings Stamps had been handled by their brother of ficer, but in each case it was admitted that no report on the matter had been made to a superior officer. . An unexplainable silence, similar to that in the stamp case, is being main tained by the police in the blackmailing r eeman' s Quality Store 200-202 First St., S. E. Criticism has also been directed at the police department for putUng al most every available man on "Shadow's" case and leaving -the remainder of the city at the mercy of bandits and high waymen. Hardly a corporal's guard was left at the station last Thursday night when "Shadow" announced his second appearance on the Base Line road.
