14 THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL PORTLAND, OREGON ' FRIDAY JANUARY 7. 1921. PENROSE'S END IS. PREDICTED BY s; his OPPONENTS and that the appointment of a receiver was wrongful. ; i dr. men to T KEEP SALEM OS ; - - i ....... i Vah!ngto!n. Jan. 7. (U. P.) Po litical enemies and critics 6f Sena tor Boies Fenroae today were busily spreading the word that Penrose's ehtunge of fj-ont on the. emergency tariff bill marked . the beginning' of the end for him as a dominant power in Pennsylvania and national poli tics. ; -;"': 1 " ': : ' A aide from! his. illness, which haa fobbed Penrone of his former stamina, hia foe declared nothing: has so con tributed to his passing as the abandon ment of his fight on the tariff embargo bill. They were led to magnify his ac-iJng. operations of the Barton brothers tkn into tnia importance oy reason 01 the emphasis! he placed on his opposi tion ftolthla measure in statements here and elsewhere ' when 1t first came up arid again when it was sent to the sen ate. . ' ' t ' Ilia Inability to "handle the situahon was - borne in on Penrose, it was de clared? by the obstinate attitude of his Republican colleagues on the committee, who are. wild to have told him plainly they would risk a division in party ranks on the' very eve of the new ad ministration iin order to get the. bill passed. 'I ' Penrose, hls friends' said today, real ized :that bis physical condition would not allow 'him to make a, fight for his position and he backed, down rather than be defeated. , I The senator's friends refused to at tach political! importance to the incident and said his! enemies were using it for propaganda purposes, both tit Pennsyl vania and n Washington. They angrily criticised such tactic and said Penrose's foes "coflld go as far as they liked" if they thought it would do them any good.' -(. s Officers Selected by Realty Board . : Without Contests 'At the annual election of officers of the Portland Realty board in the grill room of the Portland hotel at noon to day.' all officers chosen for the- coming year were elected without opposition. The right of Her bert Gordon to a seat in the, forth coming legislative session as a mem ber of the Multnomah county delega tion is upheld in a decree handed down by Judge Bingham of the Marion county circuit court Thursday afternoon, sustaining Gordon's de murrer to the petition filed by Lea. lie M. Murray of Portland, contest ing -Gordon's right ; to the seat and dismissing the case. ; - Murray, who was represented In the contest by Paul Dormitzer, Portland at torney, had attacked Goraon's election At the personal solicitation of Bishop .William O. She par d arid a large number of local : Methodists, Dr. E. -Hickman reconsidered his resignation of i the presidency . of Kimball college and announced this morning that he had decided to turn down the Eastern offer and take the Salem post. Dr. Hickman will move to Salem Sat urday with, his family and assume ac tive control of the school of theology. The board of trustees of the college met Thursday in Portland and gave Dr. Hlckfnan the privilege of Withdraw ing his resignation. 1 i " Dr. Hickman said this morning he felt happy because he was going to fe maln in the" Northwest. Instead of all the supply charges in Oregon Method ism' being grouped Into a district and placed under the supervision of Dr. Hickman, -a new arrangement was an nounced. - ; i ' The new president wil have charge of the life service department of the Centenary movement throughout the Northwest, and ;will give considerable .of his time to recruiting young people for missionaries. deaeOness work, social service work, the ministry and other church work. . Dr. '.Hickman was to have left Port land next week for Qhicago to become associate counsellor "to Dr. John W, Hancher, general secretary of the board of education of ! the Methodist church. He has been released by 'ishop Shepard as associate, pastor of "Cehtenary-Wllbur Methodist church. sbut' still remains a member- of that quarterly Conference. offices at the same election. it '. is understood here that Murray, whose protests to - Governor Olcott against the issuance of an election cer tificate to Gordon were also unavailing, will now carry his fight to the legisla ture.
