Cohen , Aside from the large crop there are other reasons for tfce present sluggish ness in the . potato market.' Consumers have to some extent been weaned away from potatoes by reason of the extreme prices that have ruled In the last couple of years. Many have used substitute vegetables instead of potatoes. Rice and beans have been the principal substitutes because of the low prices in those lines, this being especially true of beans. Bean prices today are practically at the normal level. Huge stocks of beans were carried over from last year's crop Lby California growers because of their errorts to rorce a mgner price man tne market would absorb. Now. with a big crop of 1920 added to the 1919 production. there is an unusually liberal stock in sight, resulting in further price rechic tions. . Little wheat is held by them because of their inability to sell their normal supplies of flour This baa necessitated the closing of in any plants in the country, resulting in a shortage of mills tuffs, which hare been selling at low prices in sympathy with the general depression in coarse grains. , Of interest to the trade is the report that Europe is beginning to take stocks" of barley in this country.
