The weariest hours for the postal clerks will draw themselves out between Thursday noon and Friday night. Postmaster Jones predicted Wed nesday. It means the holding of baby salmon in feeding ponds at the hatchery until they are large enough to take care of themselves. f With the runs of fish on Puget sound and the Fraser river in Canada rapidly dwindling despite continued planting of miHions of tiny salmon, - the Canadian hatchery department is faced with the necessity of finding a more practical method of propagation. The dominion authorities have, pur chased a hatchery slta at the head of Cultus lake on the lower Fraser 'river in British Columbia, and two hatchery superintendents will come to Bonneville this winter to make a more detailed study of the Oregon system, according to Rodd's. letter. . Woman Treasurer Resigns" Roseburg. Dec. 23. The Roseburg city council accepted the resignation of Mrs. C. C. Alley as city treasurer and the mayor appointed W. F. Thomas to the post. Mrs. Alley has held the office as treasurer - for five years and resigned to accept a place in the sheriff's Office in the tax department. Ex-Detective Found Guilty of Stealing Chinaman's Safe "Guilty as charged" was the verdict of a jury in Circuit Judge Morrow's court late Wednesday afternoon in the trial of Thomas Cullen, former detective, charged with stealing a small safe and about $1700 in money from the home of Ding Wing, a Chinese tailor. Cullen will be sentenced at 4 o'clock this aft ernoon. Robert Campbell was indicted jointly with Cullen for the crime, but they elect ed to have separate trials. The court calendar is so filled that the trial of Campbell cannot take place until some time in January. Ferndale Pioneer Dies at Age of 90 ; Freewater, Dec. 23. Andrew Jackson Criegler, a well known resident and a pioneer of Umatilla county, died at his home at Ferndale this week and was buried in Athena by the Masons, of which order he had been a' member for more than 55 years. He was born in Mis souri 90 years ago and crossed the plains when a small lad. . John Flodin Jailed For 6 Months for Stealing Gasoline When the gasoline shortage last sum mer made work scarce for Klamath Falls jitney drivers, John Flodin . could not resist, the temptation of helping him self to a portion of the bountiful supply the government had at the Klamath In dian reservation:; Wednesday afternoon he pleaded guilty before Federal Judge Bean to larceny of government prop erty and was sentenced to six months in the Multnomah county jail. - Two barrels were missed by the agent In charge. Assistant- United States At torney Austin Flegel told the court, so a guard was put on duty. On June 4 the guard saw Flodin, E. A. Quaf and Jesse Ransacker on the platform. They pleaded not guilty on Monday and -are to be tried March 4.
