THE. OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1H2V. - VIFE SLAYER - IS RECOVERING AT DALLAS HOSPITAL DaJIaa. Or., Dec. ; 2 ?. G eorge F. "West, who Monday shot and killed . his wife at the hotfie of John G. ' Brown in this city, ta under guard of a deputy sheriff at the Dallas hospital, where it Is reported he is recovering from the effects of poi . son which he wallowed lmmediate- ly after killing his wife. He will be removed to the county Jail with In a few days. According to a statement made , by J. F. Sh'adle, a brother-in-law of the dead woman, West and his wife had been separated about two years, but were not divorced. He 'had been working In the oil field near Fellows, CaL. while his wife had been employed as a house keeper in various homes in this county. She had been at the Brown home about three months'. LOCATES WIFE The driver of a Salem tazlcah, who drove West out from Salem Monday morning, said 'he had performed that service for him on three successive days. West first hred the car Saturday, in forming the driver that he wanted to BO to Dallas in search of his wife. They drove to Dallas and on to Perry dale, north of here, but Mrs. West was not located. The search was resumed Sunday, with the same result, according to the taxi man. Monday morning they , frist drove to Perryd ale, where West secured Information as to where his wife was living. Returning o Dallas, they drove direct to the Brown home, in the north part of town. Arriving, there, West told the driver, to wait for, htm and entered the house without knocking. I- IRES FATAL SHOT Immediately two shots were fired. West reappeared on the front porch and drank something from a bottle. He then walked over to the waiting car, removed his handbag, paid the driver and dis- missed him. The driver lost no time in getting to the courthouse ' and in forming Sheriff Orr that "something - was wrong over there." When Sheriff Orr arrived at' the Brown home he found the woman dead in the kitchen, with two bullet wounds in her body and head. West was sitting in chair in another room, still con scious and able to tell what had hap- pened. ' He Is said to have admitted to the officer that he bad shot his wife And then drank poison. A physician was called and administered antidotes. Coroner Jl. L. Chapman took charge of the body. The dead woman Is survived by a daughter. Maggie Crocker, 14, a child by a former husband. She was in school at the time of the tragedy. Development Club : Formed to Advance John Day Projects Boardman. Or., Dec 22. NOWR E PUBLICANS USE WAR BUREAU McAdoo Eents Home In Los Angeles; To Spend Winter There Los Angeles. Dec. 22. (I. N. S.) It was announced today t,hat former Secre tary of the Treasury W. O. McAdoo has ' rented the Beverly Hills residence of Kdward L. Doheny Jr. for the winter season and will arrive here from New York January 3 with his family.. Mr. McAdoo expects to return Kast about February 1, but his wife and two chil dren will remain until spring. Washington, Dec. 22. (WASH INGTON BUREAU, OP THE JOUR NAL.) First crack out of the box, In the new session of congress the Republicans ot 4he senate have taken up the revival of a part of the machinery of war legislation In the form of directing the war finance corporation to resume the work It abandoned in May, 1920. The ! senate Republicans set solemnly about this task without once cracking a smile, although during the campaign they set up a great cry for "repeal of all the war emergency legislation which grants unusual and dangerous powers to administrative officials of the gov ernment. , Senator Harding made til is a leading feature in many Of his speeches, and Republican speakers generally followed suit. As a matter of current humor the Quick about-face has few parallels. . In little more than a month after the cam paign i ended the denouncers of this wicked wartime legislation- were exert ing themselves to revive part of it, al though the administration thinks it un wise to do so. "In the house, by way of doing-something that would reflect their cam paign 4 talk, the Republican leaders brought in a new war legislation re pealer, but leaving loopholes for escape in the case of things that it may not seem advisable to. repeal. While the repealer was being brought upon the floor of the house the senate was still discussing the "reviver," and the humor of the situation was brought out In strong relief. : .. Heavy casualties have marked the savage guerrilla warfare between British troops and Black 'and Tan policemen on one side and roving bands of well armed Sinn Feiners on 5 the other side in the . mountains of Southwestern Ireland. According to information from Tlp perary today, from 15 or 29- persons were killed in a violent engagement that covered considerable territory in that country. - Fifteen of the republicans were re ported to have been killed. The casual ties of the crown forces were not of ficially announced at the time, this dis patch was - written, but it was known that Sergeant. Walsh of the Royal Irish Constabulary was shot and killed from ambush while leading reinforcements to ', Mullinahone. ! Sir Nevil MacReady, commander of the 'military forces, is combing the Tip- perary mountains In an effort to dis arm all Sinn Feiners in that isolated community. The mountain region of Tipperary might be compared with the wilds" of West Virginia, Kentucky, or Tennessee. The republican bands op erating in that region have secret bases. of supplies and headquarters in the mountain fastnesses known only to themselves. As they have been life long residents of the district they know every nook and cranny of the mountains. It is easy for them to ambush detach ments of soldiers or police in the lone ly mountain roads and then disappear, suddenly reappearing in some distant part of the country to renew -heir at tacks. . . .
