H,A.h in th North end in the Sontb. as well
as in the Eaw the egg market has steadied con
siderably doling the last tew days and at -scene
points advanced prices are the rule. Weather
conditions are the principal factor in the trade
at i most centers, although the a!mo general
absence of good storage quality offering M also
asserting an influence which tends to keep the
market from dropping further at this tune. ,
Those desiring special information regfrding

BTTTEB SITUATION U5CHA!fGED
Situation in the butter trade is unchanged for
the day with prices held stationary here and in

LARGE OEA7TGE8 HOLDING HERE
While the market for email sixed oranges con

are not so plentiful and some are commanding a

GREATER RUN OF SMELT ARRIVES
Greater run of gillnet melt is reported from
Columbia rirer points. -Loral prices are down
to 2830o a pound. Halibut is in good-supply
with sales around 24c. ateelbead salmon is un
usually .firm at 25c.
Lower beef prices are again due In the
retail shops within the next few days
with a further shading of wholesale
figures. Some of the downtown shops
are keeping very close to the wholesale
declines, but in some parts of the city
there appears to be a dislike on the part
of retailers to give the public the benefit
of the drop. ,
It begins to look -as if the drop In
eggs has been suspended and the market
appears at the bottom, for the immedi
ate future at least.
The expected drop In butter did not
materialize here because of the fact that
the weak markets , elsewhere -. have
steadied. '
The following prices ruled generally in retail
shops for good quality. Some values are frac
tionally higher and inferior stuff fractionally
lower:

Light Trade and
Wheat Price Is
v Mixed at Opening
Chicago, Dec 21. (L N. a) After
working to higher levels early, mainly
In sympathy with strength In coarse
grains, wheat turned weak' late In the
session on general selling Induced by
continued decline in stock market, to
gether with lower cash premiums. Corn
and oats manifested Improved strength
early, but lost much of their early gains
near the last when wheat dropped.
Unfavorable weather, with rain and
storms, reported over many parts of the
grain belt, led to considerable support
early, particularly in coarse grains.
Provisions closed higher.
Resting prices for December wheat
were at declines of 2 cents, March
dropped 2c and May 3c lower. Decem
ber corn advanced lHlc, May.c
up, and July c higher.
Chicago, Dec 21. (I. N. 8.) A light trade
featured wheat at the opening, with local pro
fessionals the best aellers. Buying power was
weak until the decline ran into resting orders
held by commission houses. December started
slow. Much and May were unchanged to He
lower.
Corn started unchanged to e lower, with
a very light roiled trade.
Trade in oats was also featureless. The mar
ket opened unchanged to He lower, each bouse
taking scattered offerings.
Provisions were steady, with little offered and
not much wanted. '

Continued heavy buying of wheat by
Europe is confirmed and the general
cash situation ie showing real strength.
Were it not for the feeding of the short
by some of the overburdened growers,
the situation would undoubtedly be much
stronger and the price higher.
While I have persistently said for many months
that wheat would be forced too low by the inter
rational clique and that some day the short
sellers would be brought up with a short turn,
practically all newspapers and grain interests re
ported that the market was going to pieces.
Recently many of the leaders have Joined The
Journal's side of the market. It wae now been
demonstrated beyond a doubt that more wheat
has actually been sold short to foreigners than
can possibly be delivered from this country un
less the home population is forced to go without
wheat bread.
-Not only are foreigners anxious buyers of
wheat in the face of declining foreign ex
change, a Terr serious situation for them, hut
it develops that all wheat cargoes received
abroad are instantly unloaded and go into con
sumption channels.

OIL BEING INVESTIGATED
New York. Dec 21. (L N. S.) Inroortant
developments in financial circles were expected
today following the request of the stock exchange
authorities for a report on all transactions in
Houston Oil, between December 14 and 20.
Houston Oil waa selling aa high as 82 on De
cember 14, but In the days following it broke
violently and closed yesterday at 66 . a new
low mark for the year.
It was declared there were no developments
in, the affairs of the enmpany to warrant the

New Tork. Dec. 21. (L N. 8.) Acute
unsettlement ' featured- a day of sensa
tional trading of the stock market today.
Following a wide open break in Replogle
Steel, . the bear element succeeded in
causing sharp depressions in Che entire
list industrials as ' welt as . railroads
and broke over a score of stocks to new
low marks for the year.
It was the most vigorous decline 'the
market has yet suffered since the down
ward movement started. 'The range of
the decline was from 3 to 20 points. At
times a condition of absolute demoral
ization prevailed, broker throwing over
large shares of stocks without regard to
value.
In the final trading there were some
strong rallies, some stocks advancing
from 1 to 4 points.
Steel common showed special , resist
ance for a time, but under heavy offer
ings dropped in the late afternoon to a
new low record of 16X,, recovering to 77
at the close. St. Paul 'common, after
crumbling away to 21, a loss of .over 4
points, came back, at the close to 24.
Nearly all of the industrials made new
low records for the year, Baldwin touch
ing 81 and Crucible. Steel 75. Mexican
Petroleum dropped to 152 and then re
covered to 1554. Replogle Steel closed
at 50, down 19 points for the day. Read
ing broke through 75, but came back to
75 at the finish. Southern Pacific fin
ished over 3 points lower, at 93.
New low scores for the year were made
in Pierce-Arrow, American Car & Foun
dry, American Can, American Beet
Sugar, American 'Woolen, - Anaconda,
Bethlehem Steel B, Central Leather, Corn-
Products, General Electric, International
Paper, Republic Steel, Studebaker, In
dustrial Alcohol, American Internation
al, Sears-Roebuck, Vanadium Steel and
Sinclair.
Government bonds unchanged ; railway
and other bonds weak.
Total sales today were 1,770,500 shares,
bonds $34,441,000.
New York, Dec 2L (I. N. S.) The
stock market continued under pressure
at the opening today, losses ranging
from fractions to over 1 point being sus
tained. Many issues sold down tojnew
low marks for the year. Anaconda con
tinued in supply, declining 1 to a new
low for the year of 30. Steel common
got down to its previous low of 78'.
Crucible yielded 1 point to 79 and
Baldwin Locomotive fell to 85.
Mexican Petroleum azain had the widest
range and after dropping; IK to 166 H 'ad
vanced to 158 H. Cuba American Sucar re
sponded to the favorable statements published
yesterday, advancing 2 H to 24, from which it
reacted to 23. Houston Oil, after selling up to
57, dropped to 55 H- American Car A Foundry
dropped IK to 116 H.
After the early recessions the market showed
improvement. Steel common rallied to 78 H.
Houston Oil to 57 H. Kepublic Steel, after
selling oft to 57, came back to above 58. The
rails held finm and showed little chance.
The copper issues featured the market during
the forenoon, nearly all of these issues selling
down at new lows for the year.
The steel industries, after holding firm for , a
good part of the first hour, turned heavy.. .
Motor stocks also showed substantial de
clines and oil stocks were irregular.
A violent decline of 18 points in Replogle
Steel to 61 unsettled the industrial list during
the early afternoon, many issues getting down
to new low marks.
Vanadium Steel 'sold off over 6 points to a
new low mark for the year of 20 H. Cococola
dropped 2 points to 18. Steel common yielded
to 78 H. Baldwin broke 3 points from the
