THE OREGON, DAILY, JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON. 5 Ranch Near Fairview Harvests Biggest Crop in Its History; 200 Tons Cucumbers Are Taken SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1920. rS III.; GARDEN V IS COLLECTED ON RR GATED RANCH With the season's crop how all out of the ground and -marketed, etatls tlciaria at the Sundial ranch adjacent to Fairview, have figured that the noaaon Jut closed has resulted in the biggest production in the history of 4he ranch. One of the- smaller items of harvest was 200 tons of cu cumbers, gathered from 20 acres of irrigated land. . The ranch U the largest truck garden lh the state, reclaimed by dikes along the Columbia river and extending to the' north of the Sandy boulevard approach to the Columbia river highway. The last summer was a feature season, hundreds of visitors having oeen entertained ' .there, many making studies of the sys tem , of overhead irrigation that has, been developed by U e ranch promoters. HAS OW5 MILL ' - The Sundial conducts a' large mill of its own and has offices In Fairview for conducting Us shipments and -general business. At times its paryoll amounts to' $4000 a month. - The corporation own ins; the. property is incorporated with E3. O..McGaw, Charles Swigert and It. C. Campbell stockholders. The general manager of Jthe company Is E. G. Mc- - Caw, assisted by Mrs. K. C. Morrison. John liurns is superintendent of the farming operations. One of the outposts of the farm is seed peas, of which K has turjied out . over & 0,000 pounds in a eesiKon. : ' The two Fairview church organizations have united with the public school for a 'community Christmas festivity Friday evening. December 24, Christmas eve, and a most attractive program is being worked out by representatives of all or ganizations. HARD SURFACE PROVIDED Once more the county budget is graced by an item appropriating $8,000 for the hard surfacing of Fairview avenue, which would connect the Sandy boule vard and the Base Line road and " greatly facilitate travel , between GresT ham, Rockwood, Powell Valley and othef' points to the Fairview railroad station, an Increasingly important shipping point for many producers of eastern Multno mah county. Twice before, however, the budget has provided for this road, and . it fell down to gravel, which is not what is wanted anil in the long run costs more than cement or asphaltum. The petition for an election of the Fairview school district to vote on the question of Joining in the Union high school district at Gresham, has been filed but notices, are not yet posted. It is ex pected that the election will be set for Friday evening, December 31. If there Is to be any world exposition In Oregon in 1925 Fairview wants' to be in on it. Its people assert they have the finest 'View of the Columbia river in the county and are so situated that it would make an ideal spot" for the location of the exposition Itself. Ralph Repp has returned from the hospital and has almost completely re covered. He was operated on for ap pendicitis. Mrs. C. A. Jeffries and her niece, Mrs. M. Duff of Paul, Idaho, are visiting Mrs. S..D. CampbeU of Lents. They expect to spend the winter In Portland. Mis Erfna Smith has succeeded Miss Bemlce Sterns as assistant librarian at the Lents library. DANCES AT LENTS PROVNG POPULAR Along with planning for district Improvements in the way of paving and sewers and sidewalks, the Lents Community culb is proving itself a popular social agency through its series of dances. Several -have al ready . been given this season and more are in prospect for the winter. City Engineer Laurgaard's report to the counoil recommending that the city take over certain county roads within the district was received at Lents with gratification as it would mean more rapid improvement of the district at saving of the cost o acquiring rights of way for streets. The new automatic telephones, now in universal use In the Lents district, hav ing supplanted the manual phones, are the subject of considerable comment throughout the district. Many sub scribers complain that they cannot get their number, while others declare It .is only a question of knowing how to operate the mechanism. Everett France, 103X8 Fifty-seventh avenue southeast, attended the older boys' conference in Salem. He repre sented the Lent Evangelical church. H. 'K. Hedge was honored recently by being elected worthy patron of Rose City chapter of the Eastern Star. His wife wss named -worthy high priestess of the White Shrine. Marie Schleget, who was much loved by the people of Sunny side, Clackamas county, died at her home- recently. The Christmas mail to and from Lents is heavy. It arrives, except Sun days, at 7 :86 a. m. and 12 rOO p. m., and departs at 9 :20 a. m., 12:30 and 6:20 p. m. , . An election of officers of the Young People's society of the Evangelical church was held at the home of Mrs. Scheurman, 6223 Eighty-ninth street, Tuesday. j . The sister of Mrs. Marie Schlegel came from Statuck, Wash., to attend the funeral of her sister. The Parent-Teacher association of Franklin high school held a meeting Tuesday. The - dean of Franklin high school, Ella E. Wilson, will entertain mothers of senior class members Thursday. Funeral services for Peter Roth, who was accidentally shot at Coblenz, Ger many, were conducted there recently. The commander of his troop. Lieutenant Desmond O'Keefe, paid a warm tribute to him. The body will be sent to his paronts in Lents. Mr. and Mrs. John Howe, Fighty second street, are building a new home on Fifty-sixth avenue southeast Mrs. Ella By man is back of - the counter again serving lunches at the Lents school. The family has been in quarantine for diphtheria for several weeks. ,Mrs. C. P. Blanchard, formerly of l-nts, is now in Denver, Colo. Mrs. Coral Henge, who underwent a serious operation, has almost fully re covered.
