ARAKAN GOES OUT

Httamohip Arakan cleared this morn
ing: and left down this afternoon
with 269,394 bushels of wheat, val
ued at $484,909. The shippers' dec
laration called for $1.80 a, bushel.
This is one of the lowest declara
tions (r6m Portland since 1916. ,
Charters for grain, foreign, are hang
ing around or at the average rate of
exchange 87s 61. Exchange went up this
morning; ani would ' place that on a
basis of 85s. Foreign bottoms have been
taking U grain in sight and the only
cereals carried in American ships are for
the east coast of the United States and
for the Orient.
Lumber, charters have been dormant
for - the last two weeks and nothing has
been noted .'either in steam or sail ton
nage. While the lumber trade has been
looking up in the Orient and on the West
Coast, the rates have been holding high
and little tonnage offering for that class
Of trade. . - 7
The steamship Quillwark. a long time
charter, sailed, from an Francisco yes
terday, and will load -wheat for Kerr,
Off ford at Portlbnd for Naples. The
Quillwark -was taken jprlor to the gen
eral drop in . rates. . ' ;

the first trial proved satisfactory.
