FIVE CITIES OUT
OF MILLION LIST
Salem, Dec. X6. Thirty Oregon
cities and towns qualified tor place
in the list of million dollar bank de
posit -cities as compiled by Will II.
Bennett, state superintendent of
banks, from reports under the call
of November 15. This Is a loss of
five cities from the September list,
Heppner, Athena, Condon. Bums and
.Gresham falling to qualify for "place
on the November list.
- Totil deposits In tha 113 state and
national banks fn the $1,000,000 cities
are shown as $236,877,018.37, Increases
in bank deposits being recorded in the
banks of Kueene, Klamath, uFalls, Med
ford. Koseburjr. Grants Pass. Ashland.
Lakeview, Milton and Woodbura.
There is no chsnge in the standing of
the first three cities ji the list,- Port
land maintaining its undisputed lead
with Salem in second plilo and Astoria
third.

The total deposits in the state of Ore
gon November 15, .1920, amounted to
$281,420,908.49, Of which $15,814,101.73
were time and savings deposits and the
balance demand deposits. Time and sav
ings depocits have increased $,S02,17$.71
since November 17, 1919, and $328,
9i.70 since September 8, 1920, but de
mand deposits have , decreased so as to
make a net loss In deposits since No
vember 17. 1919, of $24,909,834.73, and
since September 8, 1910, of $3,043,182.19.
In other words, time and savings de
posits during the last year have increased
11.7 per cent, while demand deposits
have' decreased 15.1 per cent, causing a
ret decrease in total deposits of 8.1 per
cent.
Portland deposits have decreased
$2,286,247,13 since September 8, 1920, and
deposits in most of the other towns on
the list have also decreased. Towns
starred have shown some Increase.

Strawberry Plant
Inspection Will Be.
Made in Clackamas
Oregon City, Dec. 16. Inspection of
the strawberry Tines of Clackamas
county will be. made Thursday by Lea
B. Strong, chief deputy plant quarantine
officer of San Francisco, in company
with A. H. Finnagan, president of the
Clackamas County Strawberry Growers
association. The state board of hor
ticulture recently placed a quarantine
on all strawberry plants in Oregon, but
on recommendation of ttaa county
growers removed the district between
the Willamette, Molalla and Clackamas
rivers from the ban. .
A thorough inspection will be made to
determine whether county growers will
be allowed to ship plants out. A meeting
of the organisation with Strong win
be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock
at the office of County Agent Scott in
this city. . to which ' all . strawberry
growers in the county bare been invited.
Southern Oregon
Pioneer Resident
Dies at Medford
Medford, Or., Dec. 1. Alonzo M.
Woodford, aged 78, Medford and South
ern Oregon pioneer, and- postmaster of
this city from 1904 to 1912, died at his
home here Tuesday. He is survived by
his son, J. R. Woodford, Medford drug
gist, and four sisters, Mrs. F. M. Stiver
of Vancouver. Wash.; Mrs. J. A. Lamb
of Coquille, and Mta J. II. Williams and
Mrs. Kuth ESlrod of this city. He eame
across the plains from Missouri in 1862,
residing at Canyonvllls, until be re
moved to Medford in 1834. Throughout
the Civil war he served in the First Ore
gon cavalry. '
University Chemist
Plans New Process
Of Wood Distillation
University of Oregon, Eugene, Dee, 16.
Professor O. F. Stafford, head of the
chemistry department of the University
of Oregon, is working out a new process
of wood distillation, according to Colin
V. Dyment, dean of the school of liters
ature, seience and art. Professor Staf
ford is in Kingsport, Tenn., on a leave

turn. Wood alcohol, acetone, acetic acid,
shingle stain and turpentine are products
of wood distillation. .
Because of the activity in men's de
bating circles it has been decided to
postpone the women's tryouta until after
the holidays.
Local Brokers Send
Order by Wireless
Herrin and Rhodes, Inc., stock brok
ers of this city, have the distinction of
being the first brokerage house to have
a stock order transmitted by wireless
from Chicago to New York. An order to
be executed on the New York stock ex
change was sent to be relayed through
Chicago, at which point it was held up
on account of wire trouble. From Chi
cago to New York the air route was
called into service' with satisfactory re
sults. : : ,
Army of Jobless in
Wenatchee Growing
Wen a tehee, Wash., Dec 18. That men
are arriving dally in Wenatchee seeking
work and are unable to find it, was the
statement of Chief of Police Peterson
and Mrs. E. S. Oliver, chairman of the
Chelan-Okanogan chapter of the Red
Cross before the city council. As many
as 15 or 20 have been given lodging
and breakfast at the city Jail In one
day. It was decided to have the street
committee and city engineer work out
a plan for providing work. Necessary
public improvements may be Initiated.
