resentative to the student council at
Reed college in a special election held
Thursday. Foster was nominated by
the student council to fill a vacancy
caused by the resignation of John White
in November. Foster entered . Reed In
1918, and left to enter the service the
end of his freshman year. He has been
prominent In student activities since returning-
to Reed in September. Ann
Sheperd, representative of sophomore
women on the council, conducted the
election.
Beed Beady for Debate The sale of
debate tickets at Reed Thursday and
today indicates that a record-breaking
crowd will hear- Raed's initial forensic
contest in the chapel this evening. The
negative team, Lewis Jones and James
Gantenbeln. left for Eugene this morn
ing, and the defenders, Jacob Welnstein
and Eaeton Rothwell, are prepared to
meet the Aggies, Maurice Buxton and
John Nichols. The contest will begin at
8 o'clock. Admission is 23 cents.
Beed Teacher Is Aithor Dr. Frank
Loxley Griffin, mathematics professor
at Reed college., will shortly assume Ate
role of author, according to an announce
ment made at Reed Wednesday. Dr.
Griffin, who has conducted a special
course In freshman mathematics at
Reed since coming to Portland in 1911,
has embodied the results of his experi
ence in a 500-page textbook in mathe
matics, and the book will be ready for
distribution early in January. It is be
ing printed by Houghton. Mifflin & Co.
Bad Xiek ' la Floeks Louis Carlos,
who had a soft drink establishment at
244 Bumside street, had a run of 111
fortune Thursday. ' In the forenoon the
city council suspended his license and
in the afternoon he appeared before
Presiding Judge Tazwell and pleaded
guilty to having drtnka at his place con
taining an unlawful amount of alcohoL
Tazwell suspended the sentence of the
lower court, on the ground that the
young man had been punished by the
revocation of his soft drink establish
ment license.
City to Bear Expeste Property- own
ers will not be required to make leak
age and other repairs on water" pipes
leading from the curb line to the water
main in the center of the street in the
future ; this expense will hereafter be
borne by the city. An amendment to
the former ordinance, which charged ail
repairs to' the property served, was
passed at the last session of the city
council.
, Joint Memorial Plaaaed Because of
the recent death , of Ralph Duniway, a
prominent member of . the Multnomah
County Bar association, the memorial
service which had been planned for
Saturday forenoon for the late S. B.
Huston has been postponed for one week.
At that time, it is planned, a memorial
service will be held by the bench and
bar for both attorneys.

quent have been the callers on Mrs.
Elisabeth Mae Ball, 271 College, asking
if she Is the Mrs. Elisabeth M. Ball who
is seeking a divorce in the local courts,
that the former is desirous of enlighten
ing the public on the matter. She is sot
seeking divorce from Harold S. Ball, she
said, and has no intentions of taking
such a step. Mrs. Elisabeth Mae BaU
is an employe of the Owl Drug company.

program of music and readings, and
the Roberts class for .business young

snatcher escaped with a purse belonging
to Miss Lucille Jackson, 681 East Stark
street, Thursday night, after he had
collided with her and Jostled her roughly
at Nineteenth and Stark streets. On ac
count of darkness. Miss Jackson was un
able to get-a good description of the
