Japanese Marriage and
Hand-Embroidered Kimonos
Here is an ideal gift for any woman, but especially for the bride-to-be. In
Japan a bride is fortunate indeed who has more than one of them, and the
number of these gorgeous garments she possesses indicates the financial
standing of her parents, , "
The bride with wealthy parents has as many as seven marriage kimonos
and changes these beautiful garments seven times in the course of the. wedding
ceremony in order to show her kith and kin the opulence of her robes. But
generally she wears three kimonos--one of them when going to the ceremony,
which is usually held at the bridegroom's house. Upon arriving she drops her
kimono and puts on the most beautiful one. Then she appears among the
guests and dririks three nuptial cups with her bridegroom, which is the token
of eternal union. After the ceremony is over she again changes her garment
and visits her neighbors with her mother-in-law, thus announcing her marriage.
