DOCK COMMISSION
DEFERS AWARDING
OF PIER SHED JOB

the , dock commission this morning.
Bids were opened and Engineer He
gardt and City Attorney La Roche
were Instructed to report Saturday
morning. .. Technical error in, one of
the bonds was the reason given for
the delay in awarding the bid.
A Kour -tendera were made for the con
struction of the shed. The Inland Con
otructlon company, repreiiented by Tom
Sweeney, wu the low bid, that being
for $181,381.60. The next lowest bid was
by Le Doux, Schwab & Cox for $181,894.
Tranchell Pareliua placed a figure at
$181,969. Teller & Allyn hit the high
mark of $183,461.
The last two bidders were competitors
In the original call for bids. All bids
were denied and on new advertisement
were opened this morning.
- In the matter of the condemnation
f the Taylor street dock, Oak street,
the Panama Cooperage, Pacific dook
and the wharf of the Oregon Sheet
Metal Works a postponement was called
until Thursday, December 2. This ac
tion was taken by the board o give all
owners an opportunity to appear. The
estimate of Engineer Hegardt showed
that the depreciation on these , docks
ranged from 44 to 60 per cent.
SCHOONEU J. W. WELLS IS
AT ASTORIA TOR CHARTER
The schooner John W. Wells, from
Ipswich, Is at Astoria, but no outbound
charter has been announced for her.
She is controlled by Comyn & Mackall,
and Brown & McCabe are acting ss
local agents. The Wells is considered
a "whale," as she registers 2374 net
tons. The original destination was
Pugt Sound, but the diversion to the
Columbia river lends color to the rumor
that she will take lumber to Australia
or the West Coast

Oceanic Steamship comrany at London,
Kngland, la a Portland visitor today,
being the guest of William McMurray,
general passenger agent of the O-W. II.
& N., and H. I. Hudson, traffic man
ager of the Port of Portland. Jackson
inspected the Portland terminal facil
ities this morning and left for a' tour of
the Columbia river highway this after
noon.
Washington Aids Oregon
Washington will cooperate with Ore
gon in the movement to eliminate Pan
ama canal tolls on intercoastal shipping.
according to advice received from the
Tacoma Chamber of Commerce by- the
State chamber this morning. The move
ment to eliminate the tolls was Inau
gurated by the State chamber through
the Northwest Rivers and Harbors con
gress. ' '
. Federal Suit Dismissed
The suit of James B. Maker to ob
tain $3000 damages from the steam
schooner Stanwood for a broken thumb
sustained tn loading the vessel was dis-,
missed In the federal court this morning.
Judge Wolverton ruling the court had no
Jurisdiction because the case was not
strictly an admiralty one, since the. acci
dent took place on a dock. .
Joan of Arc Abandoned
San Francisco. Nov. 28. (I. N, S.)
The steamer Joan of Arc has been given
up as a total loss. Captain Cecil
.Brown, marine surveyor, returned here
yesterday and stated that her bow is
jammed fast between the rocks and her
stern pounding in the surf at Port Or
ford. ' Fire Attacks Oil Tanker

LOaded with fuel oil, the Standard Oil
tanker Oneka. bound for Kobe, has put
info Honolulu after a thrilling battle
with fire in one o'f her tanks. A cable
received here said that the fire was
being subdued, and later it was an
nounced that the Oneka A unloading.

Airplanes to Link
Vancouver With
Foreign Nations
Vancouver, Wash., Nov. 26. That
Vancouver will become a station of an
international system of airplanes is the
plan of R. E. GoVez of the P. R. G.
Air Lines company, recently organized
here.
. A proposition has been taken up with
the city council for the securing of a
suitable landing field near Vancouver.
The old Hidden farm east of here has
been proposed by the promoters of the
movement, and action on the part of the
council is expected within a short time.
The planes which will land here will
be commercial as well as passenger
craft.
Club to Give Dance
Vancouver. Wash., Nov. 26. The
Omega club will give a dance Friday
evening at Butterfield'a hall. Mr. and
Mrs. W. J. Knapp, Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Bowman,. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. McDonah,
Mr. and Mrs. H. tiersghty and Mr. and
Mrs. F. A. Swan will be patrons and
patronesses.
1 Turkey Shoot Planned
Vancouver, Wash.. Nov. 26. A Christ
mas turkey shoot wtll be given at Battle
Ground on the Sunday preceding Christ
mas. Four hundred turkeys have been
secured for the shoot. A Thanksgiving
match was held last Sunday at Battle
Ground. .
Oentralia Couple in :
Auto Wreck Injured
Salem, Nov. 26. Mr. and Mrs. Her
mann Hoss Of Centralia. Wash., were
severely injured late Thursday after
noon, ien their automobile ran into the
side of the engine, of Southern Pacific
Roseburgsouthbound local, at the' fair
grounds crossing. Both are suffering
from cuts and body bruises and it is
feared that Mrs, Hoss may have been
internally injured. Mr. and Mrs. Hoss
were on their way to Salem at th time
of the .accident. Their automobile was

STATE UNIVERSITY
The Dalles, 'Or., Nov. 2. Henry,
P. Steers, father of "Bill" Steers, cap
tain of the University of Oregon foot
ball team, died in the hospital here
at 8 o'clock Friday morning, as a re
sult of injuries occurring when he
was struck by art automobile last
week.
His skull Is believed to have been
fractured. "Bill" Steers did not-go to
Los Angeles with his Jeam for the game
Thanksgiving and was with other mem
bers of the family at his father's bed
side. .
Steers was 79 years old. His wife and
four-children survive. He was a Civil
war veteran and crossed the plains In
1865. Hla wife also made the voyage
by prairie schooner and they were mar
ried soon afterwards in the Willamette
valley, near Salem.
The family moved to Waaco county 25
years ago. where H. P. Steers acquired
stock Interests near Antelope. He re
tired a few years ago and has since re
sided In The Dalles. The funeral will
be held Sunday, with burial here. "Bill
Steers" will return to Eugene Monday
to finish his school work. He will com
plete his course at Christmas time.
TO WALLA WALLA
Vancouver, Wash., Nov. 26. Van
couver lost the state championship
to Walla Walla Thanksgiving day In
the first defeat of the season. The
score was 42 to 6, Vancouver scoring
a touchdown by an on side Kick over
the goal line. After the few fitst
minutes of the game, in which Van
couver freely gained yardage, the
Walla Walla line grew impregnable.
Walla Walla's gains were made chief
ly through end runs. The Eastern Wash
ington team slightly outweighed the lo
cals and their speed was greater.
The line-up for Vancouver follows
Swan, right half : Griffith, left half ; Du
Bois, fullback ; Winkler, quarter : White
acre, right end ; King, left end ; Hirtle,
right tackle ; Osrnond. left tackle Deler
ling, right guard : Henderson, left guard ;
Morris, center. Wiswall substituted for
Hirtle in the latter part of the game.
The game was the last of the season,
as a game with Washington high of
Portland is considered out of the ques
tion. Attention In high school athletics Will
now be turned to basket ball and train
ing will start at once. Last year Van
couver had a championship team.
Coach Hap Miller and team returned
to Vancouver Friday morning, and were
entertained at breakfast by the Pfu
narians. U. of O. Student Dies
Vancouver, Wash.. Nov. 26. Miss Ze
nobla Ruth Laferty. granddaughter of
J. M. Blair, one of Clarke county's oldest
pioneers, died at St. Josephs hospital
Thursday, following a short illness. She
was a student of the University of Ore
gon at the time of her death. Her moth
er. Mrs. N. S. Lafferty, and a sister,
Lillian, both of Portland, survive. The
body is at Knapp's parlors. The funeral
service will be private.

Vancouver, Wash.. Nov. 26. Judge
and Mrs. A. L. Miller, Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Bowman and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
DuBois were Included among Vancouver
people who attended the game in Walla
Walla Thursday. Senator and Mrs.
George McCoy will leave for Seattle
Friday evening to attend the Washington-Dartmouth
game.
Portland Team Beaten
Vancouver, Wash., Nov. 21 The Port
land soccer football team was defeated
j by the local team In a game at Vancou

goals were made by the Vancouver team
and the Portland men scored two goals.
About 400 people saw the game.
Merchants Are to Meet
Vancouver. Wash., Nov. 16. The Van
couver Retail Aiercnants- association
will hold a get-together meeting and ban
quet at the SL Elmo hotel Monday eve
ning at 6 :30 o'clock. The purpose of the
banquet is to promote closer relations
between the merchants. Every mer
chant in Vancouver has been invited.

Funeral services for Miss Abigail
Wright, for 23 years a teacher in the
Portland schools, 16 of which were spen,t
in Sunnyside, were held this morning at
11 :30 at Finley's chapel, the Rev. Levi
Johnson officiating. Mrsr Ruth Agnew
sang. 1
Miss, Wright died Tuesday. She was
born at Corvallis, where she received her
education, being graduated from the
Oregon" Agricultural college,
. She is survived by three sisters. Miss
Ida Wright of Portland, Mrs. Hattie W.
Stevens, Berkeley, Cal., and Mrs. J. L..
Davidson of Kennewick, Wash. The
body was cremated.
It. Terry Hackett
R. Terry Hackett, deputy sheriff of
Multnomah county, died at his home,
907 Fessenden street, Sunday. " He Is
survived by his wife, Emma Hackett,
and his parents, Mr. and Mrs.' Merrill
Hackett of Washington, D. C; The
funeral was held at the Finley chapel
Tuesday afternoon. Kenneth Hall, Glenn
Tycer, Herbert White,) Gene Willis,
Henry Coffee and Edward McLean,

taken to the Portland crematorium.
Martha J. Baldwin
The funeral of Martha J. Baldwin was
held at her home. 440 North Twenty
third street, at 2 o'clock Tuesday after
noon. Mrs. Baldwin, widow of J. E.
Baldwin, died Saturday. She Is sur
vived by one daughter. Mrs. Belle
Dougherty of Santa Rosa.' Cal., and
four sons, G. TJ. Baldwin. G. W. Bald
win. J. E. Baldwin andjW. P. Baldwin
of this city.

Heavy Sentence Given
Dayton, Wash., Nov. 28. George Gos
ney, found guilty of bootlegging, was
fined $300 and sentenced to 90 days in
jail. Immedlateley upon he conclusion
of the trial he was rearrested by a
federal officer. The city case will be
carried to the superior court.

R. S. Shelly, sunervlsor of the Sluslaw
naUonal forest Is at the forest service
today to take over a government ambu
lance used during the war which he will
reconstruct for use in general fire work.
Shelly is making plans for an active year
next summer with, road-building, timber
sales, more adequate forest protection
and an improvement of the trail system.
