Aya. vice president of I mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmimmmmtmB!BSSmmmmm'mm&BaBBSa RECOMMENDED IS BY ENGI NEER BROWN ;-.!.. The North Portland industries committee will file the report of its engineer, W. G. Brown, recommend ing an open channel, improvement of North ' Portland harbor with the port of Portland commission and then seek the support of the special committee on port legislation named by the Chamber of Commerce, it was announced this morning. According1 to Brown an 'open channel will be more economical as well as more satisfactory to the industries affected. Basing his estimates on the actual costs of the Aladdin fill. Brown reported that sn open channel . 300 feet wide and 25 feet deep would require $212,872. Project Engineer Gilbert of the Port of Portland estimated that a closed har bor would cost $431,832. inclusive of the sewer which would necessarily be con structed for drainage in the event that the closed harbor project should be adopted. lie estimated the cost of an open harbor, the dimensions in all in stances being-800 feet wide and 25 feet deep, tt $3.19.792. "It Is clear from . the Brown report ' that if his estimates of d red urine are ao- ' well.as to the open harbor project, the latter wttl be the more economical as well, as a more satisfactory method of procedure, even after having made the 'deduction for the sewer which the closed .harbor would render necessary," com- Portland Chapter Leads in Campaign: To Help Red Cross The fourth annual roll call of Portland chapter closed on Thursday. Though the fi.0,000 membership goal still is far away, the local chapter is said by H. K. Wttham, campaign manager, to have outstripped other chapters of the north west by a comfortable margin, so far as reports received here show. j1 The benefit auction held by Portland chapter of the American Red Cross on downtown corners last night met with a hearty response, and the stock com tributed by local merchants was wiped out by the ardent bidders. D. J. Finn presided as auctioneer, and was assisted by a committee from the Klwanis club and young women of the Red Cross canteen. Carl Pierce Found Paralyzed in Home Hood River, Or., Nov. 26.
