Cooper, firs marshal lor the terminals of the municipal dock commission, bat completed arrange ments for the protection of rrvunlci- pal waterfront properties and - the first drill will be "held Saturday, No vember 27. Under direction, of Fire Marshal Cooper and Engineer Hegardt the fire forces will demon strate up-to-date service. Guest of the dock commission on Sat urday will be members of the American Society of Civil Engineers, who Will hold their annual convention in Portland this neek. Upwards of 0 members of the school of commerce from the University of Oregon at Eugene, will also be guests of the ' dock commission on Saturday. '-. 'Butter milk" route south from San Francisco. " The City of Topeka is of the vintage of 1184 and was built at Chester, Pa. She Is an Iron vessel and measures 746 net tons.. During the past two years she has been operating in the coasting service, making stops at Coos Bay and Eureka, on the Portland-San Francisco run. STORM-BATTERED SCHOONER BANGOR ARRIVES IN PORT San Francisco, Nov. 28. (I. N. S.) Driven far off her course, delayed by ' contrary winds and battered by Pacific storms, the schooner Bangor, which had practically been given up for lost in ship ping circles, made port today. Arrived Stolen Safe With $1600 Gone Found On Oswego Road With the top cut off with cold chisels, the, 600 pound safe which was stolen from the residence of Dine; Wing? 287 Salmon street, Saturday night was found Monday night by Dan Twlller, a driver for the Meier tz Frank company, half a mile , south of the Kiverdale school on the Oswego road. . Near by the demolished safe was found the trunk in which the robbers carried it from the home of the Chinese. . .Inspect ors Tichenor and Mallet were told that the niverdale school had been robbed of a quantity of tools, which they be lieve were used in opening: the safe. About 1600 in currency, silver .and gold coins was taken from the safe. . A curious Chinese breastpin if solid gold was left in the safe by the robbers. This led the police to believe that the work was not done by Orientals, who would recognlie the value of the curio at once.- i Old Colony Club Opens Quarters; , 150 in Attendance At a luncheon Monday the Old Colony club formally opened, its quarter? t the Multnomah hotel with 150 business men present ' . The club has remodeled part of the mezsanlne floor of the hotel for club and conference rooms. Charles Boon Jr., assisted by Harold Olson and Charle3 R. June, will have the management of the Portland branch. The club is formed for the service of the members, there .being clubs in 19 cities of the United (States, two in Can ada, one in London and one in Paris. A member of one club is a member of all and entitled to all its services. Trans portation, reservations (or steamers and Pullman cars and everything pertain ing to travel is one of the services the club renders. The Portland branch has a member ship of 379. John 0. Stubbs Is Selected as Senior Adviser at Harvard John O. Stubbs, 840 East Twenty third street, has been appointed one of the senior advisers at Harvard by the regents of the university, according to word received here) today. The senior advisers are selected each year from the most prominent and In fluential members of the senior class to assist the freshmen to become accus tomed to college life. Each adviser looks out for a number of freshmen. Stubbs attended Lincoln high school for two years and was graduated from Phillips academy at Andover in 1916. He was assigned to Camp, Grant after completing the military course at Plattsburg and being commissioned a second lieutenant As a member of the Multnomah club and Portland Rowing club Stubbs has been active in local athletics. : . Society will , turn out in force for both of them. 50 Clatsop Schools Are Represented at Teachers' Institute Astoria. Nov. 23. With nearly 50 schools represented and more than 190 teachers from 38 districts in the county present, the annual Clatsop County Teachers' Institute was opened Monday. It will continue through Wednesday. One of the largest realty deals in As toria business property for several weeks was consummated Monday when H. R. William Harold Galvin, aged 25, employed by the Doty Lumber company, was drowned Monday when he fell from a logging boom on the? Chehalis river at Doty.
