ably the most essential, that our road
program go ahead to successful conclu
sion. I will frankly say to you that
during: my term of office as governor
I have fiever had a more 'important
appointment to make than this and have
never bo keenly felt the need of a man
rallying to my support as I feel the need
now for you tp come to my support In
this important undertaking. It is a
thins vitally affecting all of the people
of the state and this road work is the
tiggest card in the deck. It has sim
mered down to the question of my
merely not allowing you to refuse to
accept th appointment. You must do
it for the sake of Oregon and the im
mense things which are a stake.
POLICT 2TOT FORM CL ATE D
"Besides being assured- of the sup
port of the governor." Yeon corv
- tinued. and the business interests
' of Portland, "I, was further- influ
enced by the 'knowledge that I
will have the direct advice and assist
ance of Amos S. Benson, who was my
right hand In the Multnomah county
' work."
- As to what his general policy will be,
Yeon said he had not yet had sufficient
-time to formulate one, but wouldraake
. an announcement in a few days on this
line after he had studied conditions.
Tfou can say though," he said, "that
It has always been my ambition to keep
roads out of politics."
It is well known that Teon during his
term as roadmaster of Multnomah coun
ty was an insistent stickler for perma
nent construction, taking the view that
the cost of . good work was soon for
rotten, while that of poor work was al
ways kept before the public.
CAME HEBE WITH $J.iO
The accession of Teon to the com
mission will be followed by a reorgan
ization of the commission. As Commis
sioner Booth is the oldest member of
the commission In point of service he
probably will be elected chairman.
Teon Is 65 years old and a native
of Plantaganet, Ontario, Canada. He

Astoria at J30 a month. He then be
came a lumberjack, drove an ojc team
and worked at other things around a
logging camp. In a short time he began-to
operate on his own account as a
logger. He met with marked success
and in 1906 sold out his logging Interests
for a larca figure.
Comng to Portland, he built what is
now one of the largest office buildings
of the city and engaged in .other busi
ness enterprises.
The secret of my success," he has
often said, "lay In the fact that during
dull seasons I did not close down my
camps like most of the loggers did, but
kept at work, keeping my .equipment in
shape and assembling my logs so that
when good times came again I was ready

TAKES INTEREST IJT WOKK .
In 1913 Yeon became interested in
highway : development and was among,
the pioneers of the movement in Multno
mah county.
In the spring of 1914, after the county
had begun the construction of the Co
lumbia river highway, it became appar
ent that a strong executive was needed
to prosecute the work.
Yeon was selected for this work and in
order to give him .legal standing he was
made roadmaster of the county without
salary.
He took an active part in the campaign
for the Multnomah county road bond
issue and in the subsequent road work
of the county for four successive years.
He was also an important factor secur
ing the creation of the state highway
commission and the enactment of meas
ures financing its work.
. In 1918 he resigned as roadmaster and
went to work for the government as a
dollar a year man. He served as su
pervisor of spruce production on the
lower Columbia, being given full author
ity by General Disque. During this serv
ice he was offered the military rank of
major, but he refused it, disliking to
go around wearing spurs. For the past
two years Yeon has been building up his
