Gifford, in charge of the Western district of the Salvation Army, with Lieutenant Colonel Cousins of the organization, will be welcomed to the state by W. t. Wheelwright las personal repre sentative of Governor Olcott, and to the city by Mayor Baker, at a popu lar reception at the Church of Our Father, Yamhill street and Broad way, Wednesday night at 8 o'clock. Cornmintfrpner Gifford has been active in the Army work for 3$ years, the last 12 of which were spent as director of the New England district. When the commissioner was sent out to take charge of the western district, which has headquarters in - San Francisco, Gov ernor Coolidge of -Massachusetts vice president-elect, sen, a personal letter to Governor Olcott, telling of the high es teem In which the commissioner is held in New England and of the welcome he is deserving of at the hands of the peo ple of Oregon. , The commissioner will be met by the advisory board of the Salvation Army and, with Mayor Baker, presiding, a luncheon will be tendered the commis sioner at the Portland hotel Wednesday noon. Major Bree, head of the Salvation Army in Portland, is attending to the details of the entertainment of the vis itors. . Christian Scientist To Lecture Sunday -Second Church of Christ. E. church will be celebrated Sunday. At 9 :45 a, m. there will be a Sunday school rally. At 11 a. m. Rev. K. O. Berglund of Seattle, who was pastor of the church 20 years ago, will preach. r The Lord's supper will be administered by the district superintendent. Rev. An tony E. Lind. At 3 :30 p. m. all Swedish ministers in the city and their churches and the Norwegian-Danish Methodist ministers and churches are invited to participate in the Jubilee. The visiting ministers or representatives of the churches will speak briefly. A song and praise service will be held at 7 p. m., and at 8 o'clock Rev. J. N. Burdell of Tacoma, who served as the pastor of the church 10 years ago, will preach. This will be the closing service of the Jubilee and of the series of special .meet ings held during the past two weeks. Mrs. Carl G. Anderson, soloist, the church choir and the male chorus will sing at all the services. All persons who at any time during the past. 30 years have had any connection with the church are especially invited to take part in the celebration. Union Thanksgiving Services Announced The Church of Our Father and the Temple Beth Israel will hold union services at 11 o'clock at the Unitarian church. The Rev. and Mrs. N. Addison Baker, visiting Portland under the aus pices of the National Laymen's league, will arrive Wednesday 'and will par ticipate in the Thanksgiving service. The Rev. Mr. "Baker and his wife will be guests of honor at a supper given by the Women's alliance of the Lay men's league chapter at the parish house Saturday night. A program has been arranged to follow the supper and it la expected -that the Rev. Mr. Baker will speak. Rev. J. F. Ghormley In Pulpit 49 Years Sunday marks the beginning of the fiftieth year of the public ministry of Dr. J. F. Ghormley of Kern Park Chris tian church. In recognition of this occa sion well prepared musical programs will be given at both morning and eve ning services. St. Andrew Brotherhood The St. Stephens chapter of the Broth erhood of St. Andrew will meet in reg ular session Friday at 8 p. m. in the parish house. Mt Sunday Christian .(Endeavor Sunday will see a Thanksgiving service In practically every church in the city and next Thursday union services are announced in a large number of community centers. One of the largest sunrise prayer meet ings, will probably be that of the city' Christian Endeavor Union at the First Presbyterian church at 7 a. m. President Roland C Davis will preside. The service will last one hour; Baptist young people will meet at the Third Baptist church, Vancouver avenue and Knott streets, at the same hour. Following the meeting breakfast will be served in the church. APOSTOLIC FAITH The ' Anoetolic Faith GosDel boat has proved a success.' The launch, ! manned by the male quartet and other work ers, has been going to the ships in the harbor and holding services. Tracts and Bibles are being distributed among the sea faring men by means of this' crew. During the summer months the boat will operate up and down the river at the various logging camps and factories, holding services during the noon hour. BAPTIST I The - union Thanksgiving service for the Aibina district will be held in the Third Baptist church at 10:30 Thursday morning and will close promptly at 11:30. Rev. Ward W.
