7iUOisJilA RATE TROUBLES ; BEING AIRED IN " SEATTLE SESSION Rate matters as they affect Paci fic coast commodities, foreign, will be" given a thorough overhauling at the meeting of the Pacific confer ence which la scheduled to take place at Seattle this afternoon. The meeting was set for Portland for last Thursday, but was postponed on account of inability of the San Francisco agents' to be present. Advices from San Francisco state : Pacific freight rate war clouds, which loomed menacingly , on the horizon dur ing the pant few days, threatening west bound freight rates of various companies plying out of this and other coast ports to the Orient, have disappeared. "The trouble, started when the Mitsui company, following Its withdrawal from the Pacific westbound conference, of v fered lower rates than quoted in the "atfreed tariff w as to secure cargo for several of Its tramp stetmers and threw the conference members Into a sea of speculation. "When the Japanese firm took such action, the officials of the Blue Funnel llpe, anticipating a break in the rates, auoted a lower tariff also, It laatated. "Hurried meetings were held here and at Portland and Seattle and the Mltsut company was offered the opportunity of i lejolning the conference as a mean to avert a rate war, "This was accomplished today, it is said, and the Mitsui company is now again bound to the established rates, while the Blue Funnel line, while re fraining, from membership, ts understood to be willing to maintain the conference quotations." ROSE CITY AXD ALASKA TO GO OX FIVE.DAY SERVICE William McMurray, passenger agent for the O-W. R. & N. at Portland, an nounces a new schedule for the steam ships Rose City and Alaska between I'orftand and San Francisco. The Alaska will make her second voyage front Portland, sailing November 21. She will be followed five days later by the Rose City, which will get away the day after Thanksgiving. From that time on a five-day schedule will be maintained. Bailing dates from Ban Francisco will be the same as those from Portland, each vessel alternating. Dormltger, Portland attorney, desires to prevent the seating of Herbert Gordon as member of th lower house of the state legisla ture for Multnomah county, - he must carry his case to the house of repre sentatives. ' Governor Olcott, tn a letter to Dor mltzer Friday, made It plain that so far as his office Is concerned Gordon's cer tificate of election will be issued as soon as the official vote is certified to him by the secretary of state. ; - Dormitzer protested the Issuance of a certificate to Gordon on the grounds that he had been disqualified through the fact that he was a candidate - for two office at the same election. In his reply Governor Olcott points to the opinion of Attorney General Brown, de claring that Gordon could pursue such a course legally, in which .opinion Attor ney General Van Winkle coincides. "The only duty the governor has to perform in this instance is to issue the certificate of election, and it shall be so Issued at the proper time," the gov ernor writes. , Hot Jke Arrivals Hot Lake, Nov. 20.
