Aa expected, there Is a temporary increase in the demand for supplies and as high aa $1.60 01.65 is reported paid for No. 1 Burba nil and American .Wonders at country stations which hare common freight rate to outside point. Sale of a carload at Washougal, Wash., at $1.50 Is confirmed, this being in line with the local situation because of the added freight charge. J,ut why the local trade will persist in bringing in Yakima potatoes to Portland when better quality la available at home and at prices slightly below what the Eaatern Washington stock cost to land here, is on of those mysteries of the trade. While a few lots of Yakima potatoes hare ar rived here showing most excellent quality thi season, much of the stuff haa been considered extremely poor, and would not be accepted at all from home producers. S.) Grains collapsed soon- after the opening under a selling wave that carried prices down to the lowest levels in over four years. Liquidation was on and prices running into stop-loss orders to sell accelerated the decline. ; The weak financial situa tion in the East, lowerceotton and stock markets, crash in local and outside cash markets together with the atmosphere of general business deflation, dispelled any confidence on the buying side. The extreme decline in wheats was somewhat checked on buying by Eastern houses against export sales, "jie ported that Bel gium and Germany took as high as 1,000,000 bushels wheat today.t Provis ions slumped with grains. Cohen Turkey market is still a very unsettled affair In the Front street trade. Re ceipts of turkeys have by no means bees liberal but there appears to be an under current of unrest among the trade. With, ail other commodity prices lower, fears are expressed that If high prices are paid to producers for turkeys, that wholesalers and retailers alike will suf fer severe losses. Little attempt ia being made by tbe Front street trade to forecast turkey prices for Thanks giring. On the basis of what is being asked in the country it means abont a 50c market on the street and not less than 80c a pound to the consumer. Fears are expressed that the market win show action similar to that a year ago when the prioa of turkeys broke badly on th last day's business for the holiday. Tbe only thing that is expected to keep the price of turkeys high for ThanksgiTing would be for the pro ducers to hold tbe bulk of their supplies at home until Christmas. If they do this and history is Tery plsin on this the chances are that the market will break badly then. Personally, 1 would make no forecast what ever as to what turkeys will sell at for Thanks giTing. Such a forecast would be a mere opin ion, and again history says that opinions re garding turkey, prices are usually wrong. In the meantime supply and demand will ml for turkeys and price will be gauged accord ingly. AMEBIC AX LIVESTOCK FKICE8 Chicago, Nov. 19. (U. P.) Hog prices slumped again today on leading live stock exchanges of the country, new low levels since 1917 being established. Cleveland reported the biggest drop, the market falling off 65 cents at the opening. Declines of 50 cents were re corded at Indianapolis and Chicago. At Kansas City prices ranged from 111 to 311.65, a new low for the last, four years. Hogs were off generally 60 cents on the Kast St. Louis stock market. This was a new low record since 1917. Best grade of hogs reached the low est price since 1917 on the East Buffalo market today. They were quoted at 112.50. It was predicted by livestock men that the price will go still lower because of the drop in the price of corn. The de cline, according to traders, was due to flooding of markets. Hog receipts here today totaled 27, 000. Left over from yesterday were more than 15,000. Chicago Togs 912.00 Chicago, Not, 19. (L N. S.) ITogs Re ceipt!!. 27.000; mostly 60c lower. A sharp break in the prices of shipping shares, due to the passing of the dividend on the American Inter national corporation stock, which has been payins dividends at the rate of $6 a share annually, un settled the stock market Thursday and accelerated the downward movement. Many new low records were made. Net flosses in seasoned Btock ranged from one to two points. Specialties suffered declines of from three to ten points, the maximum drop being in American International. Early in the day the genera! market showed signs of resistance, a rally waa in progress when announcement of the passing of the American interest livi dend was made public. This action had a depressing Influence and induced fur ther short selling and liquidation which continued to the close . of -the session, leaving quotations near the lowesL Passing of the American International corporation dividend overshadowed everything. Persons close to the mui agement say that the dividend was barely earned but that in view of the South American situation the directors con sidered it wise to stop payments entirely.
