THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, OREGON . ' . TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16. 1920. LOW GRADE CANNED SALMON AT LOWEST PRICE KNOWN ST0CR MARKET TRADING SHOWS AN IMPROVEMENT 16 IE HH VERY UNCERTAIN . Market for turkeys continues even wore uncertain than a few days ago. During- the last 24 hours-the local trade vas compelled to shade Its previous quo tations somewhat1 Kim though then was only a limited supply of turkeys svsilaMa for the trad, demand u acaatsly sufficient to knrp offenngsr-clesned tip. Bulk of the aalea were made around 4S4He a pound for good dressed stock, although here and there limited aalea were reported from 1 to S! a pound above tbeae figures. w With the Puget aound market not inclined to bid up to the expected: values for turkeys, com jwtltion at Oregjn shipping points is not likely to be nearly as keen ; as some of the holders had exported. The big parkin' firms and 'other buyers are not going to force extreme values, according to their present, intentions, most of them being inclined to forecast a moderate price this season. Mrs birds are coming forward in small sup ply with .quotations about as recently reported. Those desiring special information regarding -any- market, should write the Market Editor. Oregon Journal, enclosing stamp for reply. CHEESE MARKET IS CENT, HIGHER Advance of lc a pound for- cheese is an nounced by the Tillamook Creamery association for its various offering. This advance has likewise been added to the local, price, effective at once. . ! BtTTTER TRADE IS HOLDING WELL Trade in the butter market is holding well. - There is so surplus of fancy stuff in sight and prices are generally being maintained. Offerings of foreign butter are increasing since the price advanced here. EGG SUPPLIES ARlv XOlll V A L Noignal offerings of fresh eggs continue in the local trade. Along Front street the bulk of the business is in cokl storage stock. . 1' rices tor all offerings are unchanged for Tuesday. SI GAR IS DOWN A HALF DOLLAR Further cut of 50e per hundred pounds is announced in the price of-- refined sugar by tuanotacturer and local wholesalers have put Die lower prices into effect at once. Ibe new I list uii granulated is 111. ' DRESSED HOGS . Rt'LlXG LOWER With the sharp cut ih tlie livestock price, 'the market for country killed hog is down to l02ik; along the street for most offerings. This is higher than tiie livestock basis.. Veals re sharply lower, especially for heavy stuff. 1 -after selling down to l2(s14c a pound. Tops round 18 19e. - CMARJCET BASK.ET RETAIL, PRJCXT By Hyraan H. Cohen There is an extreme scarcity of good salmon ln4he market at this time ana prices are holding rather firm, although generally unchanged. For some time past a large per cent of. the local trade was supplle: with the so-called fall bright salmon from Puget sound. The season there is generally closed, and this has forced a shortage in stocks here. Crab fishermen still are intent upon forcing extreme values for their offer ings, but the public is not at all inclined to pay such values. The result is that many crabs ate being place! in storage. ! Such sto -K ts not in favor with consum-. ers when offered. ' No razor cl.ims aside from a tox or so a day received here are beintr ofV fered. The price at 50c to 60c a dozen is considered too high for general tiea. Fine tomcod, fresh from iha ccean and caught in the lower Columbia, are being offerd to consumrs around 15c a pound. Fair stocks of black cod are avallaable in the markets with sales around 18 20c a pound, at retail. r Halibut is very high .priced at this1 time, with retailers asking from30c to 32c a pound. 1 The following prices ruled generally to retail hops for good quality. Some values are frac tionally higher and inferior stuff fractionally lacr: Butter Best creamery, 63 66c. Rices Fresh laid, 90c dozen; ordinary fresh. 75 Si 85c per dozen. Other grains acted in sympathy. A re port that Belgium had taken 1.000,000 bushels of wheat and that Washington was arranging- to release around 1800. 000.000 belonging to German citizens stimulated buying activity by local traders. Houses with seaboard connec tions likewise aided in the advance. The bulk of; news was more favorable to bulls. Provisions . were erratic, clos ing irregular. Closing prices for December wheat were at gains of 24c to 34e, and lc and 2c for March. December corn lost He May advanced c to c, and July gained 4c to c. Nov. 16. With little more than half the : Yakima" apple crop rolled to marked and the remainder going into atorage. growers and shippers are enabled to make aome close estimates on the amount of the tonnage for export this year, placing the tottal at 8342 cars, aa against 10.541 last year. The yield was heavier last year and prices better. Ship ments last Saturday reached a toll of 4342 for aptilea and it is estimated that 4000 cars are in storage and will move to market shortly after the first of the year. Pricea are not in viting at present and shippers feel that the market will improve af ter eastern apples have gone into consumption. OAKLAKD GROWERS ASK HIGH PRICE FOR THEIR Tl'RKS Oakland. Or.. Nov. 16. The annual Thanks giving turkey day market will be held In Oak land Friday. San Francisco and Seattle buyers are already in town and keen competition is anticipated. - It is believed that the quantity offered will be rather ; disappointing, as the hatching waa not good this year and continued wet weather caused the death of many birds. To add to this handicap the growers had diffi culty in fattening their birda and many flocks are underfed and will not be ready for market until Christmas. , Growers are refusing to con sider any offer leas than 60 cents and indica tions are that the California ' markets will not admit a higher f itrure. BIG MYSTERY HERE While strenuous efforts are being made to organize the independent salmon pack ers of the Pacific Northwest into a strong combination in order to place the busi ness on a profitable basis, fears are ex pressed that the combination will fail. . More or lea- mystery seems to be shown re rardinc the organisation and those behind it. Some are forecasting that if the combine goes through the big meat packers will be in full .control of the situation, while others as sert that the meat men have nothing what ever to do with the proposed, organization. 3 In the meantime the market for canned sal mon is going from bad to worse if such s thing is possible. Cbums are said to be of fered down to 70c a dozen for aa late aa January delivery, a price that ia the lowest known to the trade, while the raw fish con more than ever before. Medium reds were recently offered down to $1.60 s dozen, but H is stated that some of the banks ordered the canners to go back to the old price of at least $2 to save them selves from heavy loss.. count, 86c; pullets. For eign cop reports and conditions were such that more extensive bidding , for supplies was shown at primary points. So far aa the boycott of the market by. wheat growers' In concerned, it is apparently having no effect whatever in the local or eastern trade. Receipts of wheat at primary centers are prac tically normal; in fart as much wheat appears available as the trade is willing to accept Flour market continues to drag for '. both local and foreign account and little improve ment may be expected in 'this situation until the wheat market indicates that it will go no lower. Their operations throughout the session were directed to the copper and shipping shares, several of which touched new bottom figures for this movement. The depreciations caused by their at tacks uncovered stop loss orders which early in the day accelerated the down ward movement. The buying power at times was almost solely for the account of shorts. Improvement in the credit situation is dependent upon a reduction in prices by retailers. Such action, according to prominent bankers, would expedite the movement of goods and in the end en able manufacturers to pay off their loans with banks. Retailers are showing signs of restlessness arid ' some are counting on cutting . prices about the middle or December unless inclement weather forces purchases by the public.
