Butter prices will be) advanced Mon

The first "spring" Chinook salmon of
the season bas arrived in Portland, sev

retail at 50c a pound. Royal Chinook
is in a class by itself but other salmon
is selling in the retail shops at from
15 to 25c-a pound generally, according to

Some of the larger wholesale produce
firms of Portland are likely to- find
themselves running Info the Federal
Trade commission as a result of charges
of unfair business practices that oc
casionally creep upialong the wholesale
way. . ' .
There are several of the large firms with
branch bouse in other place, who insist upon
ruling or ruining he trade here. Their losses
in Portland are easily made up in other citie.
where they have branches, a condition which
is considered unfair, and on that . may give
them a chance to explain matter, to Cncle Sam.
- The latest outburst in the freeze-ont game
along the street i. in the lettuce market. While
the smaller dealers outside the association
had no lettuce to sell, the big fellows charged
the trade op to (5.50 6.00 per crate, and
the regular price went around 14.25 4.50.
The former sales, therefore. Indicate an enor
mous profit!
Now at a secret meeting of some of the
big firms it ha. been decided to sell lettuce
at- 42.60 a crate or even lower, while this
stock cost 2.91 to land here without a cent
of expense for handling charged against it.
At the same time it was decided to sell sweet
potatoes at S3. SO per 100 pounds, aa compared
with the actual cost of landing this stock in
carload lota at $3.08.
It is only a coincidence that one of the
smaller firms outside of the association received
a carload of this stock on the very day that
the big fellows met to put their price, below
the cost of buying. -
To some it would look as if the big interests
were trying to lower the cost of Urine. Such
is not the case. They beat down these price,
only to freeze out the ma Her . dealers, and
when these are out of the way the .public pays
a handsome profit on what it requires.

Flour prices will drop sharply Monday
morning, a loss of 60c per barrel being
shown for patent. Millstuffs are weaker
and in some instances lower values are
named while for feedstuff s " reduced
values are almost general. For rolled
oats a lower price is forecast. t
Decline of 60c per barrel will beccane ef
fective in the patent flour market Monday
morning when the. local trade will quote 110.40
per barrel , for the best local brands, this being
a total loss of SI per barrel for tbe week.
There is complete demoralization in the floor
trade as a result of the low prices recently
ruling for wheat Foreign business is rather
quiet and there is no such thing as a general
local demand.
While the list price on millstuffs remains at
847 a ton at the mills for millers, some sales
are shown down to (46 and in carload lots this
price is the extreme top.
Cracked and whole con and other feedstuff,
are nhowing reductions for the day.

In Supplying Needs,
Bondholder States
San - Francisco. Cat, Nov. 13. Gover
nor John U. Calkins of the Federal Re
serve bank of San Francisco recently
addressed a letter to Liberty bond hold
ers or the Twelfth Federal Reserve dis
trict, advising them of their true Inter
est in the Liberty bond situation. .Per
haps the one outstanding fact manifest
ed by the many replies received to the
letter is best illustrated by the follow
ing answer from a man in Monrovia,
Cal. :
"Your communication received and I
would be glad if I could take more
government securities. In all, my wife
and- I have taken 822,000 of Liberty
bonds and 31100 of Thrift Stamps,
(2000 for two of our sons and 820,000
for ourselves. I am past 72 'and at that
age cannot work any more and my wife
is past 66, so we are very thankful in
having our Liberty, bonds so we can
live in . peace and contentment, as our
interest is always paid prompt Thank
ing you for your kindness In letting us
know.
If the letters Illustrate, anything In
addition to the desirability of holding
one's Liberty bonds, they are a reas
surance that an actuating spirit of real
Americanism, backed by common sense.
Is still a power in our national life.
Bankers Predicting
Revival in Buying;
Inventories Shared
Washington, Nov. 13. il. N. S.) En
couraging forecasts of the future for
business generally are embodied In latest
reports from reserve bank centers re
ceived at the treasury. The work of
reducing Inventories among both small
and large Interests is progressing with
out undue strain, according to the re
ports, and a more stable period for busi
ness is anticipated by early spring. ;
Bankers generally look for a revival
In buying and selling before long,, and
reduced Inventories among retailers
means business men must replenish their
stocks.
Banking surveys' tndlcate the attitude
of the buying public to hold back for
still lower, prices to be still very Pro
nounced in many sections.
