Higher Opening
For Wheat Shown
In Chicago Pit
Chicago, Nov. 10.(1. N. S.) Wheat
scored sharp advances- today, carrying
other grains to higher levels on reports
that the British commission were in the
market and had taken from 3,000.000 to
5.000.000 bushels of wheat. Shorts were
persistent in their covering through the
session.
General news was favorable to the
bulls and the market displayed more po
tential strength than for many weeks
past. Provision trade- was slow but
ruled firm.
At the close December wheat was S'ic
to 9ic higher and March 6c up. De
cember corn advanced 1(&1c, May
4c to c and July c to c higher.
December oats .were lc higher and
May TbG advanced.
Provisions closed strong.

Absolute stagnation is showing In the
local market for flour at the momen, be
cause of the erratic tone of the wheat
trade. With the lack of definite quota
tions on wheat here for some days, the
local flour trade has been thrown into
turmoil. j
Chicago showed a rather-stiff price reaction
during the morning and the early advance there
gave some confidence to the Pacific Northwest
trade. Little business is resulting at producing
points. While country offerings of wheat are
not liberal, they are more than sufficient to
take care of all needs of the trade.
. A further reduction of $1, a ton is showing
in the price of millstuffs here, millrun being
quoted down to $47 a ton at the mills, and
some are said to be secretly shading that
price.
Oats and barley markets are extremely quiet
locally. !
Hay trade is showing a nominal price basis
with activity not pronounced at any Pacific
Northwest- point. ' -

.Rosebnrg Claims Shortage .
Roseburg. Not. 10. Recent reports from tha
farming sections of Douglas county are to the
effect that Thanksgiving turkeya will not be aa
plentiful aa first reports given out concerning
the supply. The very heavy rainfall during ths
month of October prevented - the birds from
foraging as they usually do, and upon investi
gation it was found that the birds were not in
aa good condition as earlier investigations seemed
to show.
Owing to this fact the supply win be cut short
for the Thanksgiving trade, as there is not
enough time now before the birds are marketed
to put them in proper condition.
. Th market is not opened yet, snd no sales
have been made for either live or dressed birds.
Douglas county would supply her usual amount
of birds tor Thanksgiving but for the above
reason that. they are not gotnc to be in condi
tion for the trade, and many will be held over
lor the Christmas trade;

STOCK MARKET
By Broadan Wall ' j
New York, Nov. 10. With total
transactions amounting to nearly
1,500,000 shares, -the stock market
displayed extreme weakness Tues
day, reflecting the apprehension en
tertained on the part of security
owners regarding .the deflation go
ing on in the industrial Situation and
Its commodity markets. - i
The weakness waa most acute in the
industrial department, where some un
usually large losses were recorded and
new low records were made.
The market closed in the midst of the
selling movement, final quotations being
the lowest for the session. Specialties
dropped from 3 to 10 points, the maxi
mum decline being in Mexican Petrole-
n. standard Issues were 1 to 2 points
under the previous closing quotations.
Professional traders were busy all day
attacking the vulnerable spots. The low
er quotations were recorded as- a result
of their selling brought out liquidation
by persons who havo been holding stocks
which they bought in commission houses
at much higher prices. , - -
Call money opened and renewed at t
per cent, - but closed at 10. Demand
sterling advanced 4 cents, but practically .
no attention was paid to Its act ion j One
authority says the value of the corn crop r
has declined $1,500,000,000 compared
with last year ; the depreciation in oata
and wheat is $1,000,000,000, and in the
cotton crop $1,250,000,000. This Indicates
the extent of the decreased purchasing
power of the farmer.
Southern Pacific was relatively firm
the greater part of the day. but weak
ened in the late dealings and closed at
the low price of the day with a net de
cline of nearly . 4 points.
