"For the third consecutive day after the
election the price of wheat has ahown a
generally lower range throughout the
United States, In the East there was
further weakness reported at the open
ing of the Friday market and this was
reflected throughout the country gener
ally. -
Reports indicate that England taking on
very liberal supplies of wheat without allowing
the general trade to discover this fact. There
appears no doubt that much wheat is going to
ward the United Kingdom but the exact pur
chasers sppear to be hiding their identity.
Holding tendency of growers appear to nave
subsided somewhat. In ths Pacific Northwest
there is a sufficient supply of wheat bow offer-
ing to fill every demand. So far as the hold
ing back for Higher price is concerned, uw
movement appear to be a failure.
Coarse grain are to some extent affected by
ths lowering wheat pries but premiums con
tinue to be paid in aome instances for spot oats.

Potato market is showing a somewhat
better tone at leading selling points In
tbe country. ' Primary points in general
are inclined to report a small movement.
but some points have a fairly good in
quiry, while other sections show a light
catt. i In the local territory the market
somewhat depressed at lower prices.
The sudden avalanche of . California borers
into ths local territory may explain to Aome
extent the reason tor beating down the local
price. ' Within a fee hours of seen otner, a
number of California buyers have invaded the
local market.. Som of tbsra claim that they
are not hers : to purchase potatoes, put iu-
fomla pouts buying firms do not usually send
men np rvortn on pleasure cent.
Fact of ths nutter is that during the last
24 hours, a fair volume of business has passed
at local point. Moat of the trade in the
country appears to be around $1 per cental for
gooo, anipping auves, aiuiousn il is an ovuwvu
that any really top quality moved at that pries.
Many of the growers are quits anxious to
1 because of the fear that the stock will not
keep well.
- Expianatmn of the previous sodden advance
in the Yakima price is now given. It appears
that a number of Vancouver. B. C, dealers who
were being asked extreme prices in their own
territory, decided to purchase several hundred
carloads in the Yakima, section because of the
low prices quoted there. These orders were
given to various dealers and the dealers in turn
started, to buy the atock alter sales were made.
None of them appeared to realize that tbe other
fellow bad orders similar to their own and in
tense competition in the buying resulted with
the consequent sharp advance in the price. In
other words dealers paid high prices for' pota
toes which they had previously sold at low
prices. It was not a legitimate demand that
boosted Yakima price, but a misundertU riding
among buyers. -.
Retailers Cutting
Price, of Lumber;
More Interest Seen
"The lumber market has shown very little
change this week, aaya the American Lumbe;
ma not Chicago, "and it la becoming inc:
ingly erident that the end of the declining mar
ket in softwoods has been reached. Prices on
some grades, boosted abnormally high by the
shortage last spring, are atill somewhat out of
line and e leveling process, whereby these prices
will settle down to the natural spread between
prices asked for the different grades, is to be
expected.
"While a careful study reveals that retailer
have not increased buying to any extent there is
to be noted greater interest in the market on the
part of buyers and a larger volume of inauiries.
Retailers almost universally have followed the
trailer of letting their stocks run down, while
there has not1, been a keen retail demand a good
deal of lumber and other building ana te rial has
been sold and aa a result stocks are getting con
aiderably below normal.
One .of the factors which disarranged the
lumber market early in the Tear waa the ab
normal trend that buying took at the end of
1919. Normally setau lumbermen are accus
tomed to make their heavy purchases after
January 1. but instead of beginning in January,
2V2U, Buying began m October ana rtovember
of 1919. This buying csrried the lumber mar
ket over the period when prices are generally at
low ebb and consequently the . usual winter
slump in buaineaa waa not felt. Thi year.
however, it ia an unmistakable fact that buyer
nave rerertedr to their old policy and will not
purchase heavily for tbeir anticipated wants until
the winter is well started, and consequently the
market ia in a more normal condition.
"Report continue to come in from different
sections of the country telling, of the reduction
in prices of lumber by retail lumbermen. . One
large retail concern has set aside a surplus and
in order to stimulate the demand and assist in
building homes it will sell lumber at a loss.

Only five loads of -'livestock entered the
North Portland yards for the Friday
trade.: Hogs were a quarter higher,
while cattle an sheep were considered
steady.
Forecasts of The Journal Market Depart
ment that the price of hogs here was too low
snd that an advance would be forced, was eon-
firmed during the Fridsy trade when carload.
lota were moved at $14.50. an advance of 26c
above tbe recent top.
There has been apparently not the slightest
excuse for the previous low price here aside
from the hope of packers to grab greater profits.
They have not reduced the price of their com
modities gt all to conform to the lowered price
of hogs, therefore, the advance ia live hogs
should hare no immediate effect upon the price
os nor- products.

NDUSTRIALS ON
MARKET WEAKEN
By Broadan WalL t
New York. Nov. 4.- Thursday's
stock market was a repetition of
Wednesday's session, the rails showing-strength
and activity while the
industrials were subjected to addi
tional pressure and in some Instances
touched new low levels for this
movement.
Railroad Vissues moved Into new high
territory and in many instances touched
new high prices for the year. Net gains
in the railroad department ranged from
to nearly 6 points. Northern Pacific
being the leader and replacing Southern
Pacific aa the favorite. v
The strength of the rails had a svmna-
thetic effect on the shares of the equip
ment companies which, of course, will
benefit by reason of the expected pros
perity zor tne transportation companies.
Business was on an unusually heavy
scale with more than a million shares
changing hands. Vp to the late after
noon rails made most Impressive gains.
In the latter part of the session it was only
natural for profit taking to appear and
this caused fair recessions . from the
best quotations for the day. The rail
road group however closed strong ut
the undertone in the industrial depart
ment was heavy owing to persistent of
ferings of the steel and motor shares,
"Segregation" is the word which, Is
heard in many parts of the district. It
was applied b Northern Pacific today
and resulted In a buying movement in
that issue which suroassed that 1 In
Southern Pacific, although the latter
early in the day made a high price which
was over 18 points abova the level
from which the rise started on Monday.
