Earl Martin, a Portland student at the
University of Washington, waa appointed
one of 14 musicians on the -university
glee club Jazx orchestra by Dean I. M.
Glen, head of the department of fine
arts. The University of Washington
Glee club and jazs orchestra will tour
the state of Washington thla winter and
are Including Portland on their itiner
ary. Among new arrivals in Portland Is
Mrs. Carry B. Adams, noted composer
of cantatas, who, with Jjer husband, la
here from Terre Haute, ind.. to make
their home at 1703 Division atreet Last
Sunday Mrs. Adams attended the serv
ices at the Sunnyslde Congregational
church and complimented J. A. Holling
worth on the splendid singing of the
choir, of which he Is director.
R. H. Sawyer, pastor of the East Side
Christian church, will be the speaker at
the Musicians' club luncheon Monday
noon at the Benson. Hla topic will be
"The Meaning of the Melting Pot" Rev.
Mr. 8awyer recently returned from Eu
rope and Is an Intsresting speaker. Pres
ident J. A. Finley of the club urges as
many members as possible to attend. He
la working hard for the growth of the
organisation.
The choir of St. Francis church (Cath
erine Cvach-Fredrleh., director) la pre
paring; a. sacred concert to be. given in
the church in the near future. Among

A most enthusiastic audience greeted
Portland's two talented blind musicians.
Marguerite Flower OUnger, coloratura
soprano, and' Frank S. Sanders, pianist,
when they appeared In concert at As
toria last Friday, under the auspices of
the Baptist church. Both are cultured
musicians and have appeared In concert
here and elsewhere. They gave a splen
did program. Each group waa heartily
encored and they have been asked to
give another program in Astoria in the
near future.
Mrs. OUnger is a pupil of Mlaa Mln
netta Magera, and has given many con
certs in Salem, an'd throughout the state,
appearing here a few years ago with the
Monday Musical club. She has a beau
tiful voice and excellent Interpretation.
Mr. Sanders is a pupil of T. S. Roberts,
dean of music at the State' Blind school,
and later studied with Francis Rlchter
of Portland. He not only played his own
solos, but accompanied all Mrs. Olinger's
solos. He plays with rare skill and Is a
sympathetic accompanist These musi
cians are available for concert work.
An excellent program has been pre
pared by J. William Beecher for thla aft
ernoon at The Auditorium. The Central
Presbyterian church choir and the Schu
bert club will each give a group of num
bers. The choir will sing- "By Babylon's
Wave." Gounod. "My Faith Looks Up to
Thee," Schnecker, and "How Long Will
Thou Forget Me?" Pflueger. The club
numbers will be "Alackra-Day," Warner ;
"Chanson Provencaie," Dell Acqua, and

"There la probably not another city
in the world where one has so many
opportunities to hear soloists and aynv
phonies and everything else In the field
of music, as in New York," writes Ernst
Skaestedt formerly of Portland and
Seattle, who is now In the metropolis
engaged in newspaper work.
"In three of the concert halls they
rave about 100 concerts daring October
alone. Several symphony orchestras are
to give SO or 75 concerts each during
the winter. Violinists, pianists, singers.
American and foreigners, may be heard
every day. A violin quartet from Lon
don played recently all the 17 violin
quartets Beethoven composed, begin
ning with No. 1 and playing three every
night except one. when they played two,

her recent appearance with that com
