CHARM WITH PLAY ENJOYABLE SOCIAL xl
The eighth grade of Sellwood
school gave an entertainment Fri
day afternoon In celebration of. Hal
loween. A play was given for the
parents and friends of the children.
The program opened when a num
ber ot Sellwood beauties emerged
from behind the scenes clad In the
most beautiful costumes that the
Sellwood assemblage had ever gazed
upon.
After the usual conversation that
goes with a Halloween play Oladys
Watson and Geraldlne Amos came for
ward and sang a dainty Halloween duet
which was well received.
The real fvjn of the afternoon started
when the goblins came In dressed in
the most gruesome costumes. All had
long scrawny necks and small heads.
Cats, elves and ghosts were also in the
program, the ghosts making a big hit
when Rill Trites, who represented the
disembodied spirit of a musician,
stepped forward and amid the groans
of the other ghosts began play
lng upon an unseen piano which was
really the sweet strains of a violin
behind the scenes.
The whole play was well received.
Mrs. K. II. Richards and Miss Cowey,
teachers of the eighth grade, arranged
the program.
Sellwood school's football team won
the scheduled game with Clinton Kelly
school by default when the latter school
failed to appear at the Reed college

The following clubs will meet at the
Community house this week : Tuesday,
the Sellwood Democratic club ; Thurs
day, the Sellwood Lavender club.
The city has decided to enlarge John
son park by adding four more acres to

Twenty-third street.
On Friday, November 12, the Sellwood
Boosters' club will hold a dinner at the
I. O. O. F. hall.
Trlnclpal L. H. Morgan of Sellwood
school was recently tried by Jury and
fined $10 in the Milwaukle court for
putting a wire collar around the neck
of a cow.
Witnesses declared that the cow's neck
was a complete mass of sores and
bruises where the barbed wire had cut
in when the cow had attempted to get
through the fence.
Sellwood citizens were taken out In
Morgan's auto Friday afternoon to view
the alleged suffering heifer, and all
claimed that the cow was in fine condi
tion and that only one sore could be
seen on the cow and that was directly
behind the ear. They also stated that
they would sign an affidavit and some
voiced the opinion that somebody who
had it in for Morgan had raised the
trouble.
Morgan declared that the cow was a
family pet and that he would not hurt
the cow intentionally for anything.

It 1'h probable that no public func
tion in Montavilla has been more
highly appreciated than the one
staged Tuesday night under the aus
pices of the "Welfare league. In the
school auditorium. The management
secured Mayor Baker and Chief
of Police Jenkins as speakers. The
program was supplemented by a
male quartet. A liberal and atten
tive audience filled the assembly
room, which cheered and encored
the speakers and singers throughout
the program.
At East Seventy-ninth and East Stark
there is a telephone pole which has been
the subject of remarks by not a few. The
pole stands two feet from the curb at
right angles to the corner. A number of
near accidents have already been wit
nessed on account of it. With nearly all
traffic from Glisan transferred to the
newly paved Seventy-ninth, the pole has
become a menace. Unless it Is removed
it will only be a question of time until
some of the near accidents will pasa into
one of reality.

best that has ever been held in the
lodge's history. The total number, in
cluding Invited friends, was between 150
and 175. The rendition of the prescribed
Program surpassed the hopes of those
who had it in charge. All numbers were
beautifully executed, but that of the
"Patriotic Drill" deserve special men
tion. The participants of the drill were
dressed in red, white and blue colors,
and In the finale were marched to po
sitions by which they formed the United
States flag. This number was con
ducted by and owes its success to C. R.
Hayworth. A sumptuous spread, in the
banquet hall, followed the program.
J. N. Kunkle has fully recovered from
his Illness and is conducting his con

with the holidays.
