THF. nPFmT nATTV TOTTP1SIAT: PORTLAND. OREGON". 10 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1920. vyxvuviyii J-i. xxJLi jl uvxviix r-1 (.' i V Sunday 3s PROHIBITION IS TO BE THEME AMONG Prospects for a bono dry world never looked better to ardent pro hibitionists than today. Hunday has been net aside an "World Temper ance Sunday." Kecent victories of the dry forces will be celebrated by churches In all lands, and In those where John Barleycorn still lives, his enemies will lose no opportunity to defame him. As the persons who planned the subjects for Sunday school and young people's lessons for this year selected a topic in keeping with the day, there will probably not be a Protestant church In Portland in which prohibition will not receive mention. Fearing that some effort might be made In conRTess to change the alco holic percentage In the Volstead act, many local preach- will speak es pecially of this phase of future work In the .Sunday sermons. Ways and means of assisting law enforcement officers in Oregon will also be discussed. "It may surprise some persons te learn that a considerable portion of our globe besides the United State Is dry," writes Margaret Wlntrlnger In the Sunday School Times for this week. "For Russia, Roumanla and Finland have prohibition and prohibitory laws are still maintained in Iceland, Green land, the Faroe Islands, Porto Rico. Tutu'lla. the Virgin Islands. Panama Canal Zone, three of the great provinces of Mexico. Arabia, a large portion of Africa and In parts of New Zealand. The presidents of the new republics of Es thonia nnd Ozecho-Slovnkla are out spoken In their championship of prohi bition and will undoubtedly impress their views upon their respective governments. "All this has been accomplished since three quarters of a century ago when Neal now vowed : "With Ood's help I will change this' and made Maine dry. About the same time In Preston, Eng land, a small body of men met and is sued a manifesto againHt alcohol and thus united the two great Anglo-Saxon nations in the battle against drink."
