A majority of lS.OOO votes for Cox In
this state was predicted Thursday at the
luncheon of the Portland Press dub by
Dr. C. J. Smith of the Democratic cen
tral committee. The speaker also gave
Chamberlain a 25,000 majority, saying
he had flrurea this but mathematically
on the ratio of previous elections and
throuarh bis own personal observations
as to changes of sentiment. H assumed
that one out of ever 10 Republicans is
now a Cox man because he wishes the
League of Nations.
Clarence R. Hotchklss. secretary of
the Republican state central committee,
gave Harding a 60.000 lead and Stan
field 10,000, in his predictions. He main
tained that the last month has meant a
landslide for the Republican candidate
for senator.
The Democratic speaker said he be
lieves his party will have nearly 800
electoral votes. As to Oregon, he de
clared 260,000 people will go to the polls.

Driver Whose Truck
Smash Hurt Woman
Is Released on Bail
Ray Hamilton of Marmot, driver of
the truck vfhich crashed Into Laverne
Longheed's motorcycle on the Columbia
river highway early Thursday morning,
Inflicting serious injuries to Thelma
Hunt, Lenore street and Durham ave
nue, was released from the county Jail
Thursday night on $1000 ball. He Is
charged with driving 'without lights.
Miss Hunt was reported still uncon
scious this morning at St. Vincents
hospital.
She was riding in a sidecar on the
motorcycle when the accident occurred
near the Automobile club house. Ham
ilton was arrested after an Investiga
tion conducted by Deputy Sheriff Kex
ford. Longheed, who lives at 511 East
Forty-sixth street, was only slightly in
jured. Miss Hunt and her escort were re
turning from Hood River, where they
had attended a little birthday party in
her honor.
They made the night trip after the
party so the girl would be back In time
to work next day at the department
store where she is employed.
