Elaborate preparations have been
under way by Roberto Corruccinl, mu
aidal director and conductor, for sev
trM months, and Mra. E. I Thompson,
president' of the association, which by
now is firmly established, announces a
cast of principals that it would be
difficult to improve upon. Among;
them are three singers new to Portland
Miss Phyllis Wolfe, soprano; John
A Treharne. dramatic tenor, and Kd
ward Moshofsky, basso. The complete

A feature to which extraordinary at
tention is being r devoted - la the ballet,
under the direction of Miss Alys May
Brown. The chorus wtill number 60
oicea, and it and the orchestra will
will be of the usual high standard.
"The Force of Destiny" was written
for and first produced at the Imperial
theatre at St. Petersburg. Later it
was given In Italy and elsewhere. This
work of Verdi's is classed with "The
Maaked Ball." "II Trovatore" and
"Rigoletto," and is. Indeed, considered
a worthy companion of these operas.
The opera is very popular in Italy,
and. If not so well known, here as the
sister operas,- it is not on account of
Its gloom' or tragedy, aa many, of our
operas for which public taste clamors
have much more of this element than
"The Force erf .Destiny." Perhaps its
seeming obscurity Is due rather to the
inconvenience of production than to any
ether reason. The average company
does not find It expeditious to carry ft
cast so large, hor a greater chorus, nor
a ballet, which are Indispensable to the
success of the production. It is one
of the annual favorite at the Metro
politan. ' The music In -many ways is superior
to that of "Trovatore" and. less preten
tious than that of. "Aids." The chorus
has many beautiful and tuneful num
bers, above all those of the men, which
allow much individuality of character
and personal interpretation. Naturally,
the most interesting pieces of the opera
are "Prayer of the Pilgrim." Joined In
by the assembly gathered at the Inn
In the beginning of the second act;
the aria of Lenora, "Madre, Madri" (O
Holy Mother), with accompaniment of
Interior chorus"; the great duet. To
Seek the Lonely Heritage," between Le
not and Father Ouardiano; the finale
of the second act. which is also called

the church scene, and which finishes
with the famous prayer, "La Virgin
Degll Angelt" In this finale the organ
takes aa important part.
The third act Is mostly chorus work,
fragmentary, with a ballet and Preslo
silla. - There are two duets between
ftenor and baritone, of which one is the
well-known "Solenne in Quest Ova"
(In This Solemn Hour). The ballet
dances the spirited tarantella of South
ern Italy before the company, of sol
diers, vivandieres, etc., and the act
closes In an ''Oriental blase of glory,
with PrezloaiUa leading the chorus in
the rataplan. The fourth act la the
most beautiful and elaborate and near
modern. It Includes one aria for comic
baritone, a little duet between Father
Ouardiano and Fra Merltone, and the
grand duet between Don Carlos and
Alvaro, so called The Duet of the
Challenge." In the last , act there is
another aria for soprano and a most
magnificent trio finale of ., tenor, " so
prano and basso.

A musical treat is in store for Reed
college students and Portland music
lovers net Tuesday evening, when H.
Kllngenfeld, assisted by Lucien E.
Becker. Will be heard In a- vioHn con
cert in the Reed chapel. Ma. Kllngen
feld is a prominent violinist who has
come to' Portland to make his home,
and this will be his second public ap
pearance in Portland. He has contrib
uted to musical literature with an in
struction book for the violin. Tues
day's program follows : - Piano and vio
lin, Sonata, P major. Op. 8, Grieg; vio
lin solo. Nocturne, B flat. Op. 9, Cho
pin; "Hejra Kati," Hubay; piano solo.

was crowded to the doors last Saturday
afternoon for the piano recital of Ber-.
nice Helms. This was the first of sev
eral - student recitals , which : Mr. ' and
Mrs. ' Charles ; Dierke :re -giving " this
winter. With s, program especially In
teresting from the -musician's stand
point, the young ' pianist aroused the
audience to a pitch of enthusiasm sel

first number was the Sonata, la K flat
major .by Beethoven. There were four
movements, . each difficult and filled
with phrasing that required great skill

was followed by a group of five pieces,
each of different character, which
Showed delicate nuances, scintiUatlns
brilliance, force, tine pedal effects and
s beautiful singing tone quality. The
closing number was a superb rendering
of "The Ride of the Valkyries." played
on two pianos by Miss Helme and Bea
trice Barlow Dlerke.

Thirty members of the Portland Ora
torio society gave a pleasing concert at
the Whits temple laT Wednesday under
the auspices of the Sunday School class,
Ths Daughters of the Temple.' The
chorus and soloists were well received
and hearty applause accorded. Ths work
of Miss Phyllis- Wolfe,' soprano, and
Robert Louis Barron, 'violinist, was a
splendid part of the program. Miss
Wolfe's acoompanimeata on the piano
were played most acceptably by Mrs.
Eula' Mitchell Carroll, like Miss Wolfe
a newcomer to the ranks of Portland
musicians. She is a pupil of Theodore
Leschetisky. Hobart Louis Barron met
with hearty applause. Mr. Barron Is
becoming well known In his teaching
Pwork and as fchoir master at Centenary
HetnoaiBt Episcopal church. This same
chorus will sing at The Auditorium this
afternoon. , -
' The Monday Musical club is organizing
an entirely new department for this sea
son. This will be known aa the inter
mediate department and will be of inter
est to young musicians of high school
age; Mrs. J. R. HolUster will meet with
all interested tomorrow afternoon from
3 to 4 at the dub studio. 141 Thirteenth
street The first Monday afternoon of
each month will be riven over to a local
professional musician who will entertain.
At the meeting the first Monday In No

The meeting of the Musicians' club
last Monday u a very enjoyable af
fair. Thirty were present and listened
appreciatively to what became a dis
cussion of the "League of Nations," as
presented by Ralph R. Dunlway and
Elton Watkins.
