Fear Frosty Weather
Seaside, Or., Oct. 22. Cranberry men of
Clatsop Plains are very much worried since ti
raias hav ceased that a frost will come and
spoil the picking.
The heavy raina of September and! October
have also made it difficult for the farmers to
dry their potatoes, and the consequence is that
in the lowlands the potatoes are commencing to
rot.

New York. Oct. 22. (L N. a-The
stock market presented almost the same
features In the first 15 minutes' trading
today as prevailed in that period in yes
terday's trading, quiet strength being
shown and many stocks maintaining ad
vancea, after the opening, when business
fell off materially and the market re
sumed a waiting character.
Steel common rose to 884 and Baldwin
H to 118.
St Louis Southwestern shares were again
prominent, tha common moving dp to 89 H
and the D referred H to 494. Mexican Pe
troleum moved up 4 to 189 H. United Fruit
gained 1 4 to 212.
After the first 15 minute a selling move
ment started, causing general declines from the
initial range.
The Market waa irregular during the fore
noon, most of the leading issues fluctuating
within a narrow- range. Steel common, after
an early advance to 88 H. dropped to 87 , and
then rallied to 88H. Baldwin yielded 1 point
to 1124 followed by a rally to 118 and
then another drop to 113.
The market was a very dnll affair during the
afternoon, speculative interest being continued
to a few issues. Steel common, after selling
at 88 H, reacted again to 88, and Baldwin,
after telling at 114. yielded to 113 H.

While there is oonddTsbtel activity la the
foreign flour market and liberal salea hare re
cently been mad to Europe at low prices, tha
local situation is extremely quiet. In fact the
market appears to be top-heavy even at present
low raluae and. retailers tra buying only for
their immediate requirement.
There waa a further slashings of wheat values
in the Eaat during the morning and this natur
ally gave to the local trad a greater degree of
uneasiness than has been shown for some time.
Trade in wheat here it thoroughly demoralized
and the only selling i by those growers who are
not financially able to hold until tha market

Ntw Tor. Oct. J 2. Th resist
ance maintained by the stock mar
ket to the unfavorable foreign news
today was considered more eignlfl
cant than the decline in quotations
of from onefbto two points.
The failure of prices to break sharply
following cables from London that the
Britlah railway employee would strike
Sunday unless negotiations had been
opened for a settlement of the coal
strike waa accepted aa proof of the
strong technical position of the market
Early In the session the general tone
waa strong, with advances of from one
to two points. After mid-day an easier
tone developed and prieea began to sag.
The downward movement waa acceler
ated by the foreign newa which came
In the early afternoon. Lowest prices
were made near the beginning of the
last hour. In the -last half hour, how
ever, a slight rally developed due to
covering by professional shorts. The
close was Irregular.
Call money loaned at 7 per cent all
day. Shortly after the close a small
amount was loaned at 8 per cent.
Large commission houses say there la
practically no participation by the pub
lic in the market. This la proven by
the fact that the amount of their bor
rowings fails to show any expansion:
Partners of the .big firms say they do
not look for any increased tntereat until
