with animals to make well people sick.

call this process vaccination ; others call
it barbarous. The fact remains that it
Is a business, and a paying one at that.
I mean It ' pays ' people financially to
practice It on apmeone else. As a busi
ness proposition it had one strong point
In iy favor. . It was able to frighten
people' into submitting to vaccination.
But - people are -'learning: to read and
think. They have found that a man may
be vaccinated and still contract small
pox. They have also found that vac
cination may induce disease worse than
smallpox. So a measure has been placed
on the ballot called the anti-compulsory
vaccination amendment. Its number Is
312. To vote ""Yes"', on this measure will
no doubt Interfere somewhat with the
vaccine sales, but we are concerned Just
now with retaining; our rights as citi
zens. We insist that no law based on
our constitution will compel a citizen to
submit to an operation which may en
danger life or limb. One thlnra cer
tain, when subterfuge Is resorted to in
defense of a business it speaks poorly
for that business. Vaccinationists are
making- every misstatement possible in
an effort to defeat this measure. Do you
need more to show you where they

have the privilege of selecting your own

the city of Salem.
Several week aro a horse 'of the
"plug" variety was picked up .as an
eattray at the State Fair grounds and
given temporary lodging- in a local
"horatlery" at city expense. -
At a meeting of the council a bill
of $24 for the animal's board and
room was presented. - Kxplanatkons
were demanded. Chief of Police
Welsh Insisted that he had given or-'
ders for the liberation of the horse
but that his orders apparently had
not been obeyed. - . .
An attempt to foist the animal off
onto Councilman : Vandervort as a
gift was met by a motion on Vander
vort's part that the animal be turned
over to the use of the night police
force.
The horse Is still eating its head
off as the guest of the city.

The bodies of six overseas soldiers are
scheduled to arrive' In Portland on the 3
o'clock train Friday afternoon, accord-

bodies are those of Theodore E. Lew
