Chicago Wheat Is
Dipped Lower in
The Early Trade
Chicago, Oct. 18. (I. N. S.) Wheat
futures led the grain list to sharply
lower levels for the session. Selling
was general throughout on all upturns.
The outstanding bear news was the
lack of export demand. Which was at
tributed to the coal miners' strike in
England and the consequent drop of
sterling exchange six points to $3.40
(he lowest level since last March. Of
ferings of wheat were again liberal In
the Southwest, while various Western
corn industries were reported closed
own owing to the poor demand for
their products.
At the close December wheat was 3c
lower, and; March 4 .'Vic down. Oc
tober corn dropped 2c, December 1
2c, and May was 1 vac off. December
oats were 4o lower, and May o
down. Provisions closed sharply lower
in sympathy with corn and a drop of
40c In hogs.
Chicago. Oct. 18 (I. .V. 8.) Wheat waa
unchanged to 2 '-io lower for December and 1 H
0 2ttc lower for March at tha opening today.
Idirre was fairly general commission house sell
ing at the opening, but tbe market firmed up
when buying by local and on resting order
developed.
Commission houses were good buyers of oata
and checked tha decline which marked the open
ing. First price were SilKc lower for
December, and Vi lc off for May.
Trad in oat wa light, the opening showing
declines of 14 H c for December, and H c
for May.
, The provision market was lower and inactive.

New Tork, Oct. 18.- Wall street
ntera the new week optimistic tor
the following reasons.
First Expectation that Hardin will
be elected.
Second Commodity price have de
clined to a level which, when pavaaed on
to the ultimate consumer, should result
In hlrher prices for securities because
of the Increased buying power ot the
Income therefrom.
Threes Low supplies ot goods and
expected to result In a revival of buying
by the reneral public.
Fourth Railroad earnings are begin
ning to show increases.
Fifth A belief that there will be more
money available for loans on securities.
Six Signs of growing realisation ori
the part of labor of the changed condi
tions which require increased efficiency
and In some Instances lower wages.
The more cheerful feeling eat I sting in
the financial district Is such that prac
tically no attention is being paid to
vents which a few weeks ago would
have been used aa reasons for urging
the sale of securities. So far as the
stock market was concerned, the flnan
clal difficulties of Holland and Cuba and
the strike of coal miners in England with
the possibility of a strike by English
railway employes passed unobserved.
