A. S. Robinson, president of the asso
ciation, was toastmaster, while the as
sociation had as guests six motor car
dealers from Seattle who had come to
Portland to welcome Eling to the Sound
City. W. H. Johnston of The Dalles,
president of the Oregon State Dealers'
association, was one of the speakers,
while short talks were made by leading
dealers of Portland. Ellng will leave
Sunday, while Smith Intends to remain
here until November 1.

In this city were honor guests at a ban
quet Thursday night, covert being laid
for 230. Toasts were given by George
H. Htmes, Rev. Daniel Staver. Dr. W.
V. Kantner and 8. T. Walker, relative
to the historic church in Forest Grove,
and in honor of the seventy-fifth anni
versary of the founding of the church.
In the forenoon the following program

GUlanders ; busfness session ; "Wounded
Armenia," an address by Rev. J. J.
Handsaker ; a talk on the rural pastors'
: Hchooia at Whitman college and at Pull

Cooperative marketing was the subject
of discussion at Thursday's luncheon
of the Portland Press club In the Elks
building, the speakers being, Robert E.
Smith and C. C. CXapman. , In advo
cating the proposed stafe market com
mission measure Smith cited the suc
cess In California of state supervised
marketing and declared the farmer must
rely on the charity of speculators In
disposing of his wares under the pres
ent system.
Chapman maintained it "Would Inter
fere with private business and extend

tnat do not want state supervision.
"Tt is a otep toward Socialism,? ne
sard. "The Oregon law is not like that
of California it Is mandatory, whereas
